The Group of Seven (G7) Summit commenced on Monday in Canada with world leaders arriving to discuss the global trade tensions, ongoing wars and the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel.

Israel-Iran Conflict

The recent strikes between the neighbours caught the attention of almost every leader attending the event. The extremity of the event was realised when AP reported that Donald Trump vetoed the assassination of Iran’s Supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei, denoting how far Israel was prepared to go.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer asserted that he discussed the de-escalation of the conflict with Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He also highlighted that “intense discussions” on the conflict would continue at the summit.

Tensions With Trump

The summit will also be marked by bilateral communications with Donald Trump pertaining to the tariffs imposed by him on several countries across the world. Trump’s arrival comes at a time when his claims of making Canada the 51st state of the US and taking over Greenland have triggered huge controversies. French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Canada after making a symbolic stop in Greenland warning that Greenland is not to be sold or taken.

While addressing a press conference in Greenland, Macron said that "Everybody in France, the European Union thinks that Greenland is not to be sold, not to be taken. The situation in Greenland is clearly a wakeup call for all Europeans. Let me tell you very directly that you’re not alone.”

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to attend the event and is expected to meet with Trump to discuss the ongoing war situation and a possible ceasefire.

Countries who are not part of the summit have also been invited to the event including heads of state of India, Ukraine, Brazil, South Africa, South Korea, Australia, Mexico and the UAE.
