At least 12 people were killed and around 30 others injured after a construction crane collapsed onto a passenger train in northeastern Thailand on Wednesday morning, causing the train to derail, according to Reuters.

The accident occurred in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, about 230 km northeast of Bangkok, when a crane being used for a high-speed rail project fell onto one of the carriages of a train travelling from the Thai capital to Ubon Ratchathani province.

Local police told Reuters over the phone that the impact of the crane led to the derailment of the train and triggered a brief fire in the affected carriage. The fire was later brought under control.

Police said rescue operations were underway at the site after the blaze was extinguished, as emergency teams worked to assist the injured and recover the victims, Reuters reported.
