Rohith Guttamidhi: A Life In Character Across Borders

In March 2026, Rohith Guttamidhi appeared as Michael Novak in Arkadia Theatre Company’s production of Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage. The role followed his January performances as Ermolai Lopakhin in The Cherry Orchard and his portrayal of Boris Trigorin in The Seagull the previous year. Together, these assignments offer a more revealing introduction to his career than a general claim of versatility: an actor returning to substantial ensemble roles while maintaining a parallel body of screen work.

Originally from Hyderabad and based in New York, Guttamidhi has developed a professional practice that connects Indian independent film with American theatre and performances in Italy. His international recognition includes a personal acting special mention for One Last Sunrise, festival honours for films in which he performs, and a theatre repertoire that has travelled beyond its original New York setting.

The Anniversary took that work across the Atlantic. Guttamidhi served as both lead actor and director in the production, which debuted at The Players Theatre in New York’s West Village before travelling to Chiavenna, Italy. The dual assignment placed him on both sides of the rehearsal process: developing his own performance while shaping the production around it.

That cross-border activity is also part of the history of the company he helped establish: Guttamidhi co-founded The Chekhovians in 2022, and the ensemble staged work in New York and Chiavenna before adopting the name Arkadia Theatre Company in late 2024. His subsequent roles have made the ensemble a continuing part of his professional life, with preparation for one production giving way to another.

For The Seagull, he prepared the role of Trigorin through script analysis, character work and ensemble rehearsals, performing on February 1 and 2, 2025. His work as Lopakhin in The Cherry Orchard culminated in performances on January 9 and 10, 2026. God of Carnage followed in March. Its preparation brought dialogue, movement and timing into the rehearsal room alongside the work of developing relationships with the other characters.

The God of Carnage production also received coverage in BroadwayWorld, whose March 21, 2026 photo feature identified Guttamidhi among the cast and published images of him in performance. His New York stage work also includes the lead role in Frank Robinson’s Y? at the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning in Queens. That production brought him into a play addressing violence and the consequences of warfare, adding socially engaged contemporary theatre to his classical repertoire.

On screen, One Last Sunrise brings his acting and filmmaking responsibilities together. He took the lead role while also directing, shooting and editing the short, set against a New York sunrise. At the Durban International Short Film Festival, he received a Special Mention Award for Best Actor. That individual recognition is distinct from the film’s broader awards record and speaks directly to the performing work at the centre of his career.

The film also received Best Silent Short Film at the Indo-French International Short Film Festival and a Special Jury Award for Best Experimental Short Film at the Golden Leaf International Film Festival. At the Qatar Independent Film Festival, its honours included Best International Short Film alongside awards for direction, cinematography, editing and production. For an actor who also helped determine how the performance was framed and assembled, the project joined screen acting with a wider responsibility for the finished film.

In the Still of the Night offered another screen assignment, with Guttamidhi playing the Neighbor and also serving as cinematographer. The thriller received Best Short Thriller at the Gothamite Monthly Film Awards in 2023. Alongside his stage repertoire, the film demonstrates his involvement in work that approaches tension through a different medium and scale.

His Indian screen work includes Breaking Out, a 2019 short addressing homosexuality and the pressure of social expectations. Its festival selections included Jagran Film Festival, All Lights Indian International Film Festival and Indywood Film Carnival. The film connects his acting record to questions of representation in Indian cinema, extending the profile beyond overseas performance credits alone.

More recent work includes the role of Douglas in Unprecious Studios’ Meat Machine and participation in a Disney & Uniqlo campaign produced by Reelarc, for which he was booked as a sketch artist. These assignments add scripted screen performance and branded production to an already active theatre schedule. In each setting, acting remains the connecting discipline, even as the production format changes.

The thread running through Guttamidhi’s career is the return to performance: a role in a New York ensemble, a production carried to Italy, a character recorded for the screen. The international dimension rests on work already performed and recognised, while the succession of recent theatre roles shows an artist continuing to practise his craft.
