The fasting process begins with Nahay Khay and reaches its most challenging stage after Kharna, when devotees observe a strict fast without food or water for approximately 36 hours. The fast is completed after offering Arghya to the rising Sun on the final morning.

The vrat is believed to bring blessings, strengthen family bonds, and promote spiritual discipline.

Important Fasting Rules to Follow

1. Maintain Cleanliness and Purity

Cleanliness is one of the most important rules of Chhath Puja. Devotees clean their homes, kitchens, and surroundings before the festival begins. The utensils used for preparing prasad are kept separate, and food is prepared in hygienic conditions.

Traditional practices also emphasise maintaining personal cleanliness throughout the four days. Devotees try to avoid negative thoughts, arguments, and activities that may disturb their spiritual focus.

2. Follow the Nahay Khay Tradition

The first day begins with Nahay Khay, during which devotees take a bath and prepare a simple, traditional meal. Kaddu-bhaat, made with pumpkin and rice, is commonly prepared using minimal spices and without onion or garlic.

The food is prepared with care and consumed as part of the ritual. This day marks the beginning of the fasting period and prepares devotees for the more demanding rituals ahead.

3. Observe the Kharna Fast

The second day is known as Kharna. Devotees observe a day-long fast, generally without food or water. After sunset, they worship and prepare special prasad, including jaggery-based kheer, chapatis, and fruits.

The prasad is first offered to Chhathi Maiya before being distributed among family members and neighbours. After completing the Kharna rituals, devotees begin the strict 36-hour Nirjala fast.

4. Observe the 36-Hour Nirjala Fast

The Nirjala fast is one of the most significant and challenging traditions of Chhath Puja. During this period, devotees avoid both food and water until the final morning rituals are completed.

This practice represents dedication, faith, and self-control. However, people should consider their health before undertaking such a demanding fast. Pregnant women, elderly individuals, children, and people with medical conditions should seek medical advice and may follow modified rituals instead.

5. Offer Arghya to the Setting and Rising Sun

Offering Arghya to the Sun God is the central ritual of Chhath Puja. On the third evening, devotees gather near rivers, ponds, and other water bodies to offer prayers to the setting Sun.

The following morning, they return to offer Arghya to the rising Sun. Fruits, sugarcane, coconuts, thekua, and other traditional offerings are arranged in bamboo baskets. These rituals express gratitude to the Sun, which provides energy and supports all forms of life.

Important Traditional Offerings During Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja is incomplete without its traditional prasad. Thekua, prepared using wheat flour and jaggery, is among the most popular offerings. Seasonal fruits, coconuts, bananas, sugarcane, and rice-based preparations are also commonly included.

The offerings are generally prepared at home while following traditional cleanliness practices. Bamboo baskets, known as soop and daura, are used to carry the prasad to the riverbanks.

Another important tradition is singing Chhath geet. These devotional folk songs are passed down through generations and describe the glory of Chhathi Maiya, the Sun God, and the emotions associated with the festival.
