Actor Vicky Kaushal is likely to play Guru Dutt, in the legendary actor and filmmaker's biopic as makers want him as the lead, reported Mid-Day.

The same report stated that Ultra Media & Entertainment Group, which owns the rights to Guru Dutt’s movies, is not only showing interest to adapt some of his finest works into web series, but also planning a biopic on the iconic star.

Rajat Agrawal, COO and Director of Ultra, said, "While biopics are always challenging because they need to emulate an individual’s greatness and achievements, we would be happy to collaborate with producers and a modern-day director, who is a fanatic of Guru Dutt, and see where the project goes."

He also said that he has initiated conversations with two directors to bring the filmmaker’s journey to screen. "I have spoken to two highly revered directors, who are interested in recreating his movies into web series, and also make [a film] on his life. Once we have something definite, we can talk about it in detail. We are in touch with his family members," he added.

When asked to name one actor who can perfectly portray Guru Dutt, Agrawal said, "Naming one actor would be difficult as there is a plethora of talent, but I feel Vicky Kaushal can bring Guru Duttji’s emotional depth".

Earlier this month, the restored versions of some of Dutt’s classics including Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chaudhvin Ka Chand and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam were unveiled at the 78t edition of the Cannes Film Festival, to mark his birth centenary.

Ahead of Guru Dutt's birth anniversary, which is on July 9, there will be a tribute where his restored gems will be re-released in Indian theatres to celebrate his cinematic legacy.

Agrawal said, "All his movies have been restored in the original black-and-white version to give the same nostalgic feel. However, we are looking at colourising a few songs to see the audience’s reaction. There will also be curated exhibitions and panel discussions on his timeless legacy by prominent filmmakers."
