Ranjith's sexual harassment case has taken a significant turn, with the Malayalam film director being remanded to judicial custody while the Kerala government has publicly reiterated its support for the complainant. The development comes after an actress accused him of attempting sexual assault at a film shoot earlier this year.

According to reports, Ranjith Balakrishnan was produced before a magistrate's court in Ernakulam and was remanded to judicial custody until April 13. The arrest had been carried out by the police following the registration of a First Information Report based on the actress’s complaint. It was alleged that an attempt to sexually assault her had been made inside a caravan during a shoot on January 30.

Arrest and charges explained

As per police records, the director was taken into custody from Thodupuzha and later shifted to Ernakulam General Hospital after complaints of uneasiness. It was confirmed by hospital authorities that no serious health concerns had been detected.

Charges under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita were invoked, including provisions related to assault with intent to outrage modesty, sexual harassment and acts intended to insult a woman’s dignity. In the remand report, reference was made to previous allegations, and it was stated that granting bail at this stage could affect the ongoing investigation.

The allegations have been denied by Ranjith, with it being claimed by him claiming that the case is false.

Kerala government’s response

Amid the arrest, Kerala Culture Minister Saji Cherian stated that the government and the police stand with the victim. It was said by him that such acts would not be accepted by either the government or society, and that no protection would be extended to the accused.

It was further added that the swift action taken in the case reflected recent changes in the film sector and a more accountable environment. Individuals facing similar experiences were encouraged to come forward, with assurance that support would be provided.

Past allegations resurface

The case has also brought renewed attention to earlier allegations against the director. A previous complaint by a Bengali actress had been quashed by the Kerala High Court due to delay, while another case had also been dismissed by the Karnataka High Court.

Ranjith is currently lodged in Ernakulam Sub Jail as the investigation continues.
