It is difficult to separate Vijay the actor from Vijay the politician while watching Jana Nayagan, mainly because the film never tries to. The story follows Vetri (Vijay), a mysterious prisoner whose past slowly unfolds amid political conspiracies, family drama, and an elaborate conflict involving the international criminal John Himmler (Bobby Deol). Along the way, Vetri becomes the guardian of a young girl while confronting corruption, power and larger questions surrounding leadership. On paper, it sounds like an ambitious commercial entertainer. On screen, it quickly turns into an exhausting collection of disconnected ideas struggling to coexist.
