Babita Singh Reporting Review | Nimisha Sajayan Anchors A Familiar Story About Women, Duty And Survival

The first thing that strikes you about Babita Singh Reporting is how familiar its world feels. Baby Singh (Nimisha Sajayan) is a newly posted police officer, but at home she is still expected to be the accommodating wife who takes care of everyone else. When she gets suspended and returns to Rewa for her sister-in-law's godh bharai, she thinks she has little to do but get through the next two weeks. Then her childhood friend Bansi (Barun Sobti) is murdered, and Baby starts digging into what happened. Curiosity soon turns into an obsession, even as her family and the local police keep telling her to stay out of it.

Directed by Ambiecka Pandit in her feature debut and written by Amita Vyas, the Prime Video film has a solid premise. It understands the world it wants to examine. It knows what it means for a woman to perform unpaid emotional labour, to keep a marriage functioning while receiving little in return and to be expected to accept blame simply because she is the easiest person to blame. The problem is that the film spends too much time circling these realities without finding a sufficiently compelling way to turn them into a thriller.

Nimisha Sajayan is the film's strongest asset. Baby is not written as an obvious crusader. She is smart but under-confident, observant but accustomed to second-guessing herself. Sajayan understands this contradiction beautifully. She plays a woman who has learnt to make herself smaller without losing the intelligence underneath it. Her frustration when she finally pushes back is particularly effective because the film has spent enough time showing us what she has been swallowing.

The family environment around her is deliberately suffocating. Baby's in-laws embody the familiar hierarchy of a traditional household, while her husband Sharad, played by Anshumaan Pushkar, often comes across as frustratingly oblivious. The film is at its best when it allows this domestic discomfort to sit alongside the murder investigation. Baby is dealing with two different forms of policing: one from the institution she works for and another from the family that expects her to behave in a particular way.

The godh bharai sequence is a particularly good example. The traditional songs playing in the background become increasingly oppressive as Baby's discomfort grows. The music becomes part of the atmosphere, reinforcing the expectations being placed on her. The film's music works well throughout and the decision to use sound to build this sense of pressure is one of its more assured directorial choices.

Then there is Bansi, played by Barun Sobti. His murder is the hook, but the character himself is deliberately difficult to read. Baby knew him before returning to Rewa and his decision to meet her before his death immediately raises questions. Who was Bansi really? Why did he want to see her? What was happening inside his family? The property dispute surrounding him introduces another layer of fear, particularly when Baby begins to realise that almost everyone around her appears to be hiding something.

That setup creates genuine tension. For a while, the film keeps you guessing because each revelation opens another possibility. The city of Rewa's setting also works in its favour. It feels like a familiar tier-two-city environment where family reputation, property, money and social standing can become deeply entangled. The film captures how poverty and financial insecurity can distort relationships and push people into desperate decisions.

But this is also where Babita Singh Reporting begins to feel formulaic. The broad contours of the story are familiar. The patriarchal in-laws, the emotionally unavailable husband, the abused woman, the suspicious family and the woman who refuses to stop asking questions have all appeared in Indian cinema before. That does not automatically invalidate the film's observations. In fact, one could argue that these stories need to be told repeatedly because the circumstances they depict remain painfully common for millions of women.

The issue is execution. The film's realism sometimes becomes predictability, while its thriller mechanics do not always convince. Baby suddenly moving into investigative mode, as though her instincts alone could substitute for proper field experience, stretches credibility. The chase sequence has some good camera work and an interesting visual energy, but the logic behind it is less convincing. You can see the filmmaking trying to manufacture urgency even when the screenplay has not completely earned it.

This is particularly disappointing because Pandit clearly understands her protagonist. Her direction is strongest in the smaller moments, especially the domestic scenes and the gradual return of Baby's confidence. The film is also visually grounded without trying to make Rewa look exotic. Its world feels lived-in for a crime story.

The cast deserves special mention. Sajayan carries the film with considerable control while Pushkar makes Sharad's uselessness suitably infuriating. Sobti gives Bansi enough ambiguity to keep the mystery alive and the supporting cast creates a believable social ecosystem around the central family. Pandit's debut shows that she has an eye for people and spaces. What the film needs is a screenplay willing to take greater risks with both.

The ending is where the disappointment really lands. After building a mystery around Bansi's death and Baby's increasingly obsessive need to understand what happened, the resolution does not deliver the emotional or dramatic payoff promised by the buildup. The final stretch leaves the impression that a much more powerful film was hiding within this premise.

Still, dismissing Babita Singh's Reporting simply as "safe" would be unfair. Sometimes a story feels familiar because the reality it depicts is familiar. Millions of women continue to live inside versions of Baby's world. The emotional labour, the expectations of marriage, the pressure to absorb blame and the struggle to be taken seriously are not inventions of cinema. They are everyday realities.

The problem is that the film recognises this reality more effectively than it dramatises it. Babita Singh Reporting has the right questions, a terrific lead performance and a director worth watching. It just does not find a sufficiently fresh or satisfying way to answer them.
