A few months ago, actor Ranveer Singh sparked controversy by mimicking the climax scene of Rishab Shetty's Kantara: A Legend - Chapter 1 during the closing ceremony of the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The Dhurandhar actor was seen referring to the sacred Chavundi Daiva (or Chamundi) as a "female ghost". He also mimicked the character on stage with crossed eyes and his tongue out.
Now, an FIR has been registered against Singh at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru, accusing him of insulting Hindu religious sentiments and the Chavundi Daiva tradition of coastal Karnataka.

The FIR was filed by Prashanth Methal (46), a Bengaluru-based advocate. The case was booked under Sections 196, 299 and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as per a report in NDTV.
In his complaint, the advocate said that he saw Ranveer's video on December 2, 2025, on Instagram at the Karnataka State Billiards Association in Bengaluru. The video was reportedly shared by an account named Brief Chaat.
He claimed that Ranveer imitated Panjurli and Guliga Daiva expressions, which he described as crude, comical, and derogatory.
The complainant further stated that Chavundi Daiva is a revered guardian deity symbolising divine feminine energy in Karnataka's coastal regions, and devotees respect the deity. He alleged that calling the deity a "ghost" means a serious misrepresentation, hurting religious sentiments and causing mental agony to followers of the Daiva tradition.
The FIR alleged that the act was deliberate and malicious, with the intention to promote hatred and enmity.
The matter has been referred to the 1st Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Bengaluru and will be heard on April 8.

Ranveer Singh's Daiva controversy
Earlier, after facing backlash, Ranveer issued an apology on social media. “My intention was to highlight Rishab's incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration (sic),” he said.
“I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I've hurt anyone's sentiments, I sincerely apologise,” he added.
