Cult Korean Animation Aachi And Ssipak Makes Its Surprise Return In A 2K Remaster

Cult South Korean animation Aachi and Ssipak has made a surprise return with a new 2K remaster, giving Western audiences another chance to experience a film that had been largely unavailable for years.

Directed by Jo Beom-jin, the adult science-fiction action comedy first emerged from South Korea's animation scene with a reputation for punk-inspired designs, irreverent humour and exaggerated violence, all wrapped around a premise as bizarre as it is memorable.

Originally released in 2006, the film is known for its punk-inspired character designs, outrageous humour, exaggerated violence and deliberately strange dystopian world. The new presentation will feature Korean audio with English subtitles.

A bizarre dystopian premise fuels the story

The film imagines a future where the world’s natural resources have been exhausted and human waste has become the city’s only remaining source of energy. Citizens are rewarded for defecating with Hard, a highly addictive hallucinogenic popsicle that soon becomes a coveted status symbol. But prolonged addiction causes some people to lose the ability to defecate, leaving them branded as unproductive by the authorities and forced into exile. They eventually form the Bojagi Gang and begin raiding the city to feed their addiction.

As violence and disorder spread, the government sends Geco, a ruthless cybernetically enhanced super-soldier, to hunt down the gang and restore control.

Aachi And Ssipak caught in the chaos

Two street-smart thugs, Aachi and Ssipak, survive through the illegal Hard trade, and their already precarious lives grow more chaotic after they encounter Ippeuni in Sector 4, the city's most dangerous slum. Ssipak's infatuation with her drags the pair into an escalating conflict involving the Bojagi Gang, a cybernetically enhanced soldier sent to eliminate the group, and the mysterious power surrounding their new companion.

The newly remastered version is now streaming exclusively on Darkroom, a platform specialising in independent, arthouse, anime and cult genre cinema, with subscriptions priced at $2.99 a month. The 2K restoration was released to mark the film's 20th anniversary since its original 2006 debut, offering a fresh way for audiences to rediscover one of the more anarchic animated productions of its era.
