Uttar Pradesh: India’s Fastest Growing Aviation Hub Takes Off

There was a time, not too long ago, when flying out of Uttar Pradesh meant a long haul to Lucknow or Varanasi. For the residents of Tier-2 or Tier-3 towns in Uttar Pradesh, the choices were clear: catch an overnight train or make a tedious road trip to Delhi’s IGI Airport.

But the new wave of infrastructure development in Uttar Pradesh has faded the old memories of this hardship. In the last 10 years, Uttar Pradesh has undertaken one of the most aggressive aviation expansion drives in India. Today, the state has a network of 22 airports, including 5 fully operational international airports.

The shift is clearly visible to one and all. Back in 2016-17, air passenger traffic across the state stood at around 59.97 lakh passengers annually. By 2024-25, that number has hit a whopping 142.28 lakh. It has more than doubled as flying transformed from a luxury into a daily necessity for business, trade, and pilgrimage in the state.

The Big Engine: Jewar Has landed

The numero uno position in this stunning transformation in the state goes to the Noida International Airport at Jewar. Built with an investment of more than Rs 36,000 crore, Jewar isn't just another terminal; it’s designed to be a massive transit and cargo engine for North India.

With its operational launch, Uttar Pradesh became the first state in the country to have five international airports, including Lucknow, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Kushinagar. In its initial phase, Jewar is equipped to handle 12 million passengers annually. By the completion of Phase IV, that capacity will scale up to 7 crore. Integrated directly with expressways, dedicated freight networks, and future metro links, Jewar is set to create over one lakh direct and indirect jobs while serving as a major air cargo gateway.

Beyond Capital Hubs: Feeder Airports Lead the Way

Generally, headline-grabbing mega projects usually get the spotlight, but the real story unfolds away from them, with deep regional penetration of the developmental projects. Under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS-UDAN), smaller airfields are being established as regional centres like Aligarh, Azamgarh, Moradabad, Shravasti, and Chitrakoot, which are stepping up as feeder airports.

When these emerging towns get connected to major aviation hubs in the state, the travel time reduces significantly. Small-scale manufacturers, brass artisans, agricultural exporters, and local traders get closer to the national-level markets. Regional industrial centres no longer feel disconnected from the capital.

The traffic numbers across the following individual cities for 2025-26 paint a clear picture of this surging demand:

• Lucknow: 6,438,506 passengers

• Varanasi: 4,343,347 passengers

• Prayagraj: 1,077,393 passengers

• Gorakhpur: 867,994 passengers

• Kanpur: 322,252 passengers

• Agra: 239,758 passengers

Building an Industry, Not Just Terminals

Crucially, Uttar Pradesh isn't just building runways to handle passenger traffic; it is also creating an entire ecosystem around flight operations.

Under its dedicated Maintenance, Repair, Refuelling, and Overhauling (MRO) Policy, the state of Uttar Pradesh is developing aviation-based industrial clusters parallel to its expanding expressway network. By bringing aircraft maintenance, spares manufacturing, and aerospace engineering hubs closer to these smaller towns, the state aims to keep valuable business domestic while nurturing high-tech manufacturing skills locally.

From spiritual tourism in Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Prayagraj to industrial growth along the expressways, Uttar Pradesh's skies are busier than ever. By turning air travel into an engine of everyday regional growth, the state is making a strong bid to anchor North India's economic future.
