The Power of River Transport and Inland Waterways
One of the biggest strengths of Uttar Pradesh is its natural river system. Out of the 111 official National Waterways designated across India, 11 are located right here in UP. This gives our state a massive geographical advantage to act as a primary trade gateway for northern regions.
A major portion of National Waterway-1, about 425 kilometres running from Varanasi to Haldia, passes directly through Uttar Pradesh. Now, work is underway to extend this river route further up to Ayodhya. This will create a very efficient inland water route for heavy cargo movement. To handle all these river projects smoothly and speed up infrastructure creation, the state government has also formed the dedicated Uttar Pradesh Inland Waterways Authority.
Multimodal Terminals and Modern Freight Infrastructure
To make sure goods can shift easily between water, road, and train tracks, India's very first multimodal terminal was built in Varanasi. This project has dramatically improved how goods move across Eastern and Northern India.
On this same model, more modern terminals and freight villages are being developed in places like Ramnagar, Chandauli, Mirzapur, and Ghazipur. In fact, India's first official freight village, spreading over a massive 100 acres, is currently being set up in Varanasi to support bulk storage and smooth cargo handovers.
In addition to industrial cargo, urban public transport is also seeing new solutions. India's first urban public ropeway is being constructed right now in Varanasi. This project introduces a clean, green mode of transit while making travel much easier for millions of pilgrims visiting one of the country's most famous spiritual sites.
Jumping High in Export Rankings
All these infrastructure efforts on the ground are now showing real results in official national rankings. According to the Export Preparedness Index 2024 (which was officially published by NITI Aayog in January 2026), Uttar Pradesh secured the 4th rank overall in India. This is a big improvement from the 7th position the state held back in 2022. Even more impressively, UP achieved the 1st position among all landlocked states in India.
By building smart connectivity that joins rivers, roads, and railways together, Uttar Pradesh is removing old supply chain barriers and setting up a strong foundation for future industrial growth.
