From 1 November, a pharmacy inside a Uttar Pradesh hospital must show what it paid for a medicine and what it charges the patient. The order follows inspections by the Food Safety and Drug Administration at 214 pharmacies in 22 medical colleges and 30 hospitals. In the worst cases the gap was sixty-seven times: an injection bought for ₹74 billed at ₹4,980. The FSDA has asked the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority to see that the discount on institutional purchases reaches the sick, not the counter. Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya’s Antyodaya is usually invoked as a sentiment. Here it is a column on a bill.
