MIICCIA’s BIMSTEC Business Conference: Connecting Markets, Creating Opportunities

MIICCIA’s BIMSTEC Business Conference is slated to explore new pathways for regional trade, investment and economic cooperation.

As the Bay of Bengal region marks three decades of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), the focus is increasingly shifting towards translating longstanding regional ties into stronger business partnerships. Against this backdrop, the Millennial India International Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture (MIICCIA) is set to host the “Conference on Business Opportunities in BIMSTEC Countries” on October 5, 2026, at the Kamla Devi Complex, India International Centre, New Delhi.

The Outlook magazine is the official Media Partner of the event, publicising the prestigious event across its platforms, providing access to policy makers, industrialists, educationists, entrepreneurs and innovators.

Bringing together diplomats, policymakers and representatives of Indian industry, the conference will provide a platform to examine emerging opportunities across trade, investment, connectivity and regional economic cooperation. Ambassadors, High Commissioners and Chargés d’Affaires of BIMSTEC member countries, accompanied by Trade Attachés and Commercial Counsellors, are expected to participate. Senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce & Industry are also expected to join the discussions.

A Region of Complementary Strengths

BIMSTEC brings together Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand, linking South and Southeast Asia through the Bay of Bengal. Over the years, growing commercial engagement has reflected the region’s complementary economic strengths.

India offers a large and expanding market, manufacturing capabilities, technology, services and a broad entrepreneurial base. BIMSTEC economies, meanwhile, bring diverse strengths ranging from natural resources and agriculture to tourism, strategic ports, manufacturing and specialised industries. These complementarities create scope for businesses to explore partnerships that extend beyond conventional trade.

High-level visits and bilateral engagements have also contributed to closer political and economic relations among member countries, creating a stronger foundation for private-sector collaboration.

Unlocking the Next Phase of Growth

While trade and economic ties have expanded, significant opportunities remain to be developed. Renewable energy, logistics, tourism, digital services, infrastructure and emerging technologies are among the areas that could support deeper regional engagement.

Improved connectivity—physical, maritime and digital—can play an important role in enabling businesses to access new markets and integrate more closely with regional supply chains. Greater awareness of market opportunities, regulatory environments and investment possibilities can similarly help businesses identify practical avenues for collaboration.

The MIICCIA conference comes at a time when regional economic cooperation is gaining renewed importance. By bringing diplomatic missions, government representatives and the Indian business community to one platform, the event seeks to move the conversation from broad regional potential towards actionable business opportunities.

For Indian enterprises, the conference is an opportunity to understand the commercial landscape across BIMSTEC markets, while for participating countries, it offers a forum to showcase investment possibilities and identify potential Indian partners.

As BIMSTEC enters its fourth decade, stronger business-to-business engagement could become an important pillar of regional cooperation. The “Conference on Business Opportunities in BIMSTEC Countries” aims to contribute to that process by fostering dialogue, networking and partnerships that can help build a more connected and resilient Bay of Bengal economic region.
