The second World Humanoid Robot Games are currently underway in Beijing, bringing together more than 2,000 humanoid robots in what has been described as an Olympics-style competition for machines. But this is not just about robots racing, dancing or playing football.

The event is designed to test how far humanoid technology has progressed and whether these machines are ready to move from laboratories and demonstrations into factories, hotels, homes and other real-world environments. Here is everything you need to know.

When And Where Are The Games Being Held?

The 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games are being held from August 22 to August 26 at Beijing's National Speed Skating Oval, popularly known as the Ice Ribbon. This is the second edition of the competition, following the inaugural Games in 2025.

This year's event has grown significantly, with 666 teams and 2,056 robots from 16 countries taking part, including teams connected with the United States, Germany, Japan and China.

What Do The Robots Compete In?

The Games feature 51 events, divided into competitive and scenario-based challenges. The sporting events include 100m and 400m races, football, table tennis, martial arts, weightlifting, tug of war and dance competitions.

The more unusual challenges are aimed at testing practical skills. Robots are being asked to perform tasks involving industrial assembly, restaurant service, housekeeping, logistics, emergency response and EV charging. More than 40% of the events focus on real-world applications, with autonomy playing a major role in the scoring and competition format.

The opening days have already produced some remarkable numbers. China's Tiangong Ultra clocked 9.39 seconds in a 100m preliminary heat, faster than Usain Bolt's 9.58-second human world record. Another robot reportedly ran 400 metres in 39.7 seconds, while the Games have also showcased record-breaking jumping performances.

However, the competition has also exposed the limitations of humanoid technology. Some robots have struggled with balance, braking and recovering from errors, underlining why practical tasks such as plugging in cables or handling objects remain just as important as headline-grabbing sprint times.
