The new system uses a smart card-based ‘key’ to encrypt and decrypt the data-which can be managed by the users. At the moment, the software works between two points. Research is on to enable it work on a point to multi-point basis which is important for banks and FIs. The Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) will integrate the product into hardware and make it available commercially.

The sets team had earlier created the Secrecy System Version 3 (SS-v3) using the most secure algorithm currently available and being deployed by military users to send top-secret traffic: the Advanced Encryption Standard or AES 128. While the software has generated interest from both the private and public sector, its first big customer could be the Tamil Nadu government which is planning large-scale deployment of the new system in the state’s Wide Area Network.
