At least five people were killed and more than a dozen others were injured after a Tempo Traveller carrying passengers skidded off a mountainous road and plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu’s Doda district on Tuesday.

The death toll may rise as some of the injured are in critical condition, according to Hindustan Times.

According to reports, the accident occurred on the Doda-Barath road near Ponda when the driver of the vehicle, with registration number JK06-4847, reportedly lost control while negotiating a sharp curve.

The vehicle then fell hundreds of feet into the ravine.

Rescue operations were swiftly launched by local police, volunteers, and the district administration. The challenging terrain required a significant effort to retrieve the victims from the wreckage.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh confirmed the incident and stated that he is in regular contact with the Doda District Commissioner, Harvinder Singh, to supervise the rescue and relief efforts.] In a statement on X, the minister said, "All possible help and medical aid is being provided.”

The injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals, with the critically wounded taken to Government Medical College, Doda for advanced treatment.Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, reported HT.
