Jessica Pegula Battles Past Romanian Veteran To Reach US Open Quarterfinals

Third seed Jessica Pegula defeated Sorana Cîrstea 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the US Open quarterfinals at Louis Armstrong Stadium, New York, on Sunday. Pegula made a blistering start, winning the first 13 points and opening up a 3-0 lead before Cîrstea fought back. The Romanian created three break points to level the opening set but could not convert, allowing Pegula to eventually take it 6-3. The second set followed another tense pattern, with Pegula earning the crucial break to move 3-1 ahead. Cîrstea continued to battle and broke back while Pegula served for the match, but the American immediately created three match points and sealed victory on the next opportunity.
