India were nine for one in their second innings when the stumps were drawn on the second day of the first Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia at Adelaide Oval on Friday. Starting their second innings with 53 runs ahead, India extended their lead to 62 with nightwatchman Jasprit Bumrah (0 off 11) calming frayed nerves in the centre after opener Mayank Agarwal (5 off 21) lost his partner Prithvi Shaw (4 off 4). Earlier, the visitors bowled out Australia for 191.  Ravichandran Ashwin (4/55) and Umesh Yadav (3/40) were the top wicket-takers for India. India's first innings ended at 244 in the first session of the second day. Follow live cricket scores and live updates of India vs Australia here. (SCORECARD | Day 2 REPORT | NEWS)

4:53 PM IST: Prithvi Shaw has been brutally exposed. Pat Cummins' moving delivery breached through his defence. Just like what happened in the first innings. Gone for 4 off 4. IND - 7/1 (3.1).

Jasprit Bumrah, India's nightwatchman.

4:51 PM IST: Mitchell Starc continued. A couple of dots, then Mayank Agarwal almost reached out to Matthew Wade at short mid-off. Survived. A maiden.

4:46 PM IST: Pat Cummins shared the new ball. A good looking straight drive off the second ball by Prithvi Shaw for three runs. A dot, then a double as Mayank Agarwal opened his account. Then, Tim Paine dropped Agarwal. Six from the over. IND - 244 & 7/0 (2), lead by 60 runs.

4:42 PM IST: Mitchell Starc with the new ball. And a single off the first ball as Prithvi Shaw played it behind square. Mayank Agarwal faced the remaining deliveries without scoring.

4:37 PM IST: Ravichandran Ashwin (4/55), Jasprit Bumrah (2/52) and Umesh Yadav (3/40) were brilliant. Mohammed Shami returned wicketless. For the Aussies, skipper Tim Paine was the top-scorer with 73 not out.

And crucial overs for India as Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal came out to bat again.

4:29 PM IST: Then, Virat Kohli's bowling change worked. Umesh Yadav claimed the last wicket of Josh Hazlewood (8 off 10). Good catch at slip by Cheteshwar Pujara. India took a very handy lead of 53 in this low-scoring match. AUS 191 (72.1).

Tim Paine remained unbeaten on 73 off 99.

4:27 PM IST: Australia inched closer to 200-run mark with Tim Paine (73 off 99) playing a captain's knock. And Josh Hazlewood has been brilliant so far. They have added crucial 24 runs in 34 balls. AUS - 191/9 (72). Trail India by 53 runs.

Drinks!

Mohammed Shami on with his 15th over.

3:35 PM IST: Ravichandran Ashwin back into the attack, and a wicket. Mitchell Starc (15 off 16) run out. Brilliant glovework from Wriddhiman Saha. And of course, a very good effort from Prithvi Shaw, who picked up and released the ball at square leg in very quick time. AUS - 139/8 (60.2).

Nathan Lyon joined skipper Tim Paine in the centre.

3:32 PM IST: Tim Paine and Mitchell Starc have added crucial 27 runs in 36 balls for the eighth wicket. In the last ten overs, Australia have scored 41 runs and lost two wickets. They still trail India by 106 runs.

Mayank Agarwal put down a relatively easier one at deep to give Aussie skipper Tim Paine a life, and a four as a result, off Jasprit Bumrah in the 55th over. This was the fourth of the innings. In the next over, new man Mitchell Starc hit Umesh Yadav for a four as Aussies add crucial runs. AUS - 121/7 (56).

3:01 PM IST: Finally, Marnus Labuschagne is out. Trapped in front by Umesh Yadav. This time, no saving him. Reviewed wasted. He made 47 off 119. AUS - 111/6 (53.3)

2:56 PM IST: Aussie skipper Tim Paine hit Jasprit Bumrah for two fours in the 53rd over. 19 runs after the tea break as Australia moved past 100. AUS - 111/5 (53).

2:35 PM IST: Players are back for post-Tea play.

2:32 PM IST: Meanwhile, Cricket Australia on Friday asserted that the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India is not threatened by a fresh COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney even though the situation is being closely monitored.

2:25 PM IST: Ravichandran Ashwin wreaked havoc with three quick wickets, including the prized scalp of Steve Smith, as India took control by reducing Australia to 92 for 5 at Tea. Courtesy Ashwin's figures of 11-3-27-3, India successfully managed to neutralise a poor first innings score of 244 as Australia literally got into a shell during the 48 overs that they faced in the first two sessions. After Jasprit Bumrah (14-7-21-2) removed the two openers in the first session, Ashwin did the star turn in the second session even as Marnus Labuschagne (46 batting, 103 balls) got multiple reprieves during his audacious knock.

2:16 PM IST: India clearly on top. But Marnus Labuschagne is keeping one end safe for Australia. 21 runs and one wicket in the last ten overs. Tea.

Labuschagne (46 off 103) and skipper Tim Paine (9 off 20) are the two unbeaten batsmen. Jasprit Bumrah (2/21) and Ravichandran Ashwin (3/27) are the wicket-takers for India. Australia still trail by 152 runs. AUS - 92/5 (48).

2:01 PM IST: Huge shout for a caught behind against Marnus Labuschagne. And given out. But the review favoured the batsman. Hitting the pad. That happened off the fifth ball of 44th over. Mohammed Shami still wicketless. His figures so far: 12-3-23-0. AUS - 84/5 (44).

20 runs and two wickets in the last ten overs.

1:45 PM IST: Sensational catch to end debutant Cameron Green's stay. He made 11 off 24. Third wicket for Ravichandran Ashwin, courtesy a Virat Kohli stunner. AUS - 79/5 (41).

Aussie skipper Tim Paine joined Marnus Labuschagne in the centre.

1:36 PM IST: Jasprit Bumrah back into the attack. Bowling in tandem with Ravichandran Ashwin. Australia added 24 runs in the last ten overs with Marnus Labuschagne leading the charge. AUS - 71/4 (38).

1:20 PM IST: Ravichandran Ashwin struck again. Travis Head (7 off 20) caught and bowled. AUS - 65/4 (34.4).

Debutant Cameron Green joined Marnus Labuschagne in the centre.

1:16 PM IST: Umesh Yadav on with his tenth over, and two runs from it, for figures of 10-4-19-0. Australia have added 23 runs for one wicket in the last ten overs. Marnus Labuschagne (38 off 66) and Travis Head (7 off 17) are unbeaten batsmen.

Drinks!

1:05 PM IST: Ravichandran Ashwin continued. Two from his third over. And a review for LBW against Travis Head off the second ball. Missing leg, but umpire's call and India didn't lose the review. AUS - 61/3 (31).

12:48 PM IST: Bowling change. Ravichandran Ashwin on with his off spin. A double off the first ball as Marnus Labuschagne played it square. Then Labuschagne almost ran Steve Smith out. Tight call at the non-striker's end off the second ball. Direct hit would have done the job for India.

But Ashwin got his man. Smith caught at first slip by Ajinkya Rahane. Smith made one off 29. AUS - 45/3 (27).

12:31 PM IST: What a charmed life. Prithvi Shaw dropped Marnus Labuschagne off Jasprit Bumrah. Top edge and a sitter at square leg. That happened off the fourth ball of 23rd over. Then, an edge off the last ball falling short, in front of the second slip. AUS - 41/2 (23).

12:27 PM IST: Indian pacers continued to dominate Aussies. Another maiden over as Mohammed Shami kept Steve Smith quiet. AUS - 40/2 (22); IND - 244 All Out

12:12 PM IST: Players are back for the post-dinner session.

11:50 AM IST: Jasprit Bumrah bowled a brilliant opening spell to send back Australia's openers, leaving the hosts tottering at 35 for 2 after their pacers dismissed India for 244. Joe Burns (8 off 41 balls) and Mathew Wade (8 off 51 balls) were prepared to play the tough waiting game till Bumrah (8-5-8-2) bowled fast and full to trap both of them leg before as India ended on the right side of 'Umpires Call' on both occasions. Umesh Yadav (6-4-6-0) and Mohammed Shami (9-0-19-0) also kept things tight although they were a little more on the shorter side during the session compared to Bumrah, who reaped dividends for bowling fuller deliveries.

Marnus Labuschagne (16 batting, 15 balls) lived a charmed life when Wriddhiman Saha, touted as the best wicket-keeper in world, missed a tough but gettable caught behind off Bumrah. Labuschagne was insanely lucky when Bumrah dropped a dolly at fine leg after the batsman had mis-timed a pull shot off Shami. He went into the break with Steve Smith (1 batting, 7 balls) for company.

11:32 AM IST: Another maiden over from Jasprit Bumrah, fifth today. Steve Smith happy to bid his time. AUS - 35/2 (19).

Dinner break. Marnus Labuschagne (16) and Steve Smith (1) were at the crease.

In the previous over, Bumrah dropped Labuschagne, off Mohammed Shami while going for extravagantly trying a jumping catch. It looked like a simple chance. And the ball popped out of his hands for a four. Labuschagne was on 12.

11:25 AM IST: WICKET! Jasprit Bumrah struck again. This time, Joe Burns (8 off 41). LBW. Again, umpire's call. Just clipping the left stump. Burns' not happy. AUS - 29/2 (17).

Steve Smith joined Marnus Labuschagne.

11:08 AM IST: WICKET! Jasprit Bumrah trapped Matthew Wade in front. Umpire's call. Wade made 8 off 51 balls. AUS - 16/1 (14.1)

Marnus Labuschagne joined Joe Burns in the centre.

10:48 AM IST: Bowling change. Mohammed Shami on. Two runs from it. AUS - 12/0 (2).

10:32 AM IST: Nasty, well-directed bouncer from Jasprit Bumrah to rattle Joe Burns. Ball just missed his throat. And appeal for caught behind. Not review, understandably. That happened off the fifth ball of the sixth over.

10:28 AM IST: Matthew Wade hit Umesh Yadav for a four, through covers, off the fourth ball in the fifth over for first runs. Then a single. AUS - 5/0 (5).

10:23 AM IST: No run yet for Australia after four overs as Umesh Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah continued to deliver maiden overs.

10:14 AM IST: Jasprit Bumrah shared the new ball. A maiden to Joe Burns.

10:10 AM IST: Umesh Yadav to Matthew Wade, and a maiden over to start with.

10:05 AM IST: Umesh Yadav with the new ball. Matthew Wade and Joe Burns to open for Australia.

Innings Break!

India's tail-enders contributed precious little as the first innings folded at 244. Mitchell Starc (4/53 in 21 overs) and Pat Cummins (3/48 in 21.1 overs) dismissed the last four batsmen for an addition of only 11 runs to the overnight score. In fact, India lost seven wickets for 56 runs starting with Virat Kohli's run-out engineered by a poor judgement call from vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane. Ravichandran Ashwin (15) got one to rear up from length as Cummins got his second wicket and India's seventh in the first over of the day. Wriddhiman Saha (9) also didn't trouble the scorers getting out on his overnight tally chasing a wide delivery from Starc. Umesh Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah hit a boundary each but that was just a tail-ender's bravado as the innings folded in just 25 balls. If one goes by how pink ball matches at Adelaide have panned out, India have scored at least 75 runs less than what should have been a fighting first innings total. In the end, Kohli's dismissal cost them dearly.

9:57 AM IST: A bouncer and Mohammed Shami's done. India all out for 244, with the last four wickets falling for just 11 runs. IND - 244 (93.1).

9:51 AM IST: But Umesh Yadav (6 off 13) didn't last. Holed out. Well-judged take by Matthew Wade, and fourth for Mitchell Starc. IND - 240/9 (92.2).

9:48 AM IST: Umesh Yadav hit Pat Cummins for a four, off the second ball of the 92nd over. Yadav is in the company of fellow pacer Jasprit Bumrah as India look to add crucial runs. IND -240/8 (92).

9:41 AM IST: Another one gone. Wriddhiman Saha too gone, caught behind as Australia take complete control. Two wickets in nine balls. Saha made 9 off 26. Third wicket for Mitchell Starc. IND - 235/8 (90.3).

9:35 AM IST: Edge and gone. Ravichandran Ashwin out for 15 off 20. Failed to add to his overnight score. Wicket for Pat Cummins, caught behind. IND - 233/7 (89.3).

9:30 AM IST: Players are out for the second day's play. Ravichandran Ashwin to take the strike, and Pat Cummins with the ball.

9:18 AM IST: A glimpse of Indian cricket team huddle ahead of the day's play:

8:58 AM IST: And cheers to all Lewy fans. The Bayern Munich star has been named The Best FIFA Men's Player for 2020.

He was one of three finalists, along with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi, the 2019 winner, and Ronaldo had claimed the top prize in three of its four prior editions but were this time beaten by Bayern's treble-winner.

8:45 AM IST: Meanwhile, former Rajya Sabha MP Rajiv Shukla will once again become the vice-president of BCCI after the members have unanimously decided to elect the veteran Congressman, reports PTI. Shukla had earlier been a vice-president during N Srinivasan's regime and was also a popular chairman of the IPL governing council. Shukla's name has been proposed by DDCA president Rohan Jaitley and seconded by Uttarakhand's Mahim Verma, who had vacated the post earlier this year.

8:32 AM IST: David Warner said he's "devastated" to miss out on the pink-ball fixture of such a "big series". But the Australia opener David Warner is hopeful of playing the Boxing Day Test. The 34-year-old had sustained a groin injury in the second ODI and was subsequently ruled out of the third game in Canberra, the three-game T20 series and the ongoing opening Test.

8:06 AM IST: Here's a recap of what happened on Day 1 of the pink-ball Test

Virat Kohli reached a new career landmark but was left smarting after being run out. India reached the close on 233-6, with Kohli making his presence felt as he reached 50 in Tests for the 50th time before being denied the chance to push on for what would have been a 28th century. The tourists were 188-3 when Ajinkya Rahane set off for a single but then sent Kohli, who had reached 74, back. It meant he was run out for a second time in his Test career, almost nine years after the previous occurrence – also against Australia in Adelaide. His demise this time clearly rankled and Kohli briefly appeared to give his batting partner a glare of exasperation.

Earlier, Prithvi Shaw was bowled by Mitchell Starc from the second delivery of the day, getting an inside edge into his stumps to give the paceman his 11th wicket in the first over of a Test since the beginning of 2014. Mayank Agarwal was bowled by Pat Cummins, and at 32-2, India were just where Australia wanted them. Kohli helped to steady the innings, as he and Cheteshwar Pujara ground out a 68-run partnership. The skipper then put on 88 with Rahane, and the latter was 41 not out as Kohli trudged off. Rahane added only one more before he was pinned lbw by Starc (2-49), plumb in front of middle stump. As Rahane returned to the dressing room, television cameras showed Kohli shaking his head, with the dismissal before the close of Hanuma Vihari, lbw to Hazlewood, surely doing little to sweeten his mood.

With not much batting to come, the onus will be on Wriddhiman Saha (batting on 9) and Ravichandran Ashwin (15 not out) to take India to the all-important 300-run mark. Both Saha and Ashwin have shown the temperament to handle the second new ball and will have to demonstrate the same application that Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane showed on Thursday.

“For a 300-plus total, it’s important to play well in the first two sessions,” Pujara said to explain his dour batting (43 from 160 deliveries).

“The wicket was fresh, the bowlers were fresh, so you could not play your shots so early... it was important to be patient at that stage.”

Saha's choice in the Playing XI ahead of Rishabh Pant was a clear sign that India backed their specialist players in a match that could define the trend in the four-Test series. A head start will give the Indian team a massive psychological boost because the tourists will be without Kohli, who will be on paternity leave after Adelaide.

Virat Kohli reached a new career landmark on Day 1 but was left smarting after being run out as India and Australia battled out an absorbing opening day to their Test series.

Kohli made his presence felt as he reached 50 in Tests for the 50th time before being denied the chance to push on for what would have been a 28th century.

The tourists were 188-3 in the day-night contest at the Adelaide Oval when Ajinkya Rahane set off for a single but then sent Kohli, who had reached 74, back. Kohli was stranded halfway down the pitch and Josh Hazlewood's throw to the non-striker's end found Nathan Lyon waiting to end the dangerman's 180-ball stay.

It meant Kohli was run out for a second time in his Test career, almost nine years after the previous occurrence – also against Australia in Adelaide.
