India 4-1 Wales Highlights, FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers: Navneet Hat-Trick Powers Women In Blue To Top Pool B Spot

Greetings and welcome to everyone joining us this Wednesday for some more hockey action. India face Wales in their last Pool B match of the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup Qualifiers, looking to confirm their semi-finals spot. Stay with us for the build-up and live updates.

The top two teams from each of the two pools (A and B) advance to the semi-finals of the FIH Women's World Cup Qualifiers 2026. With India on top of Pool B after two games, they need either a win or a draw to confirm their semis berth. In case they lose, India would stay on four points and their qualification would then depend on the result of the ongoing match between Scotland and Uruguay.

The Indian women’s hockey team opened their campaign with a 4-0 win over Uruguay on March 8, and then played a 2-2 draw against Scotland. Young forward Sunelita Toppo has been in top form, scoring in both matches. Attackers Lalremsiami, Navneet Kaur, and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal have also been excellent, finding the net and creating multiple scoring opportunities.

At the back, the defence has held firm, with goalkeeper Bichu Devi making crucial saves consistently. Playing in front of a cheering home crowd in Hyderabad has also given the hosts a wonderful boost of energy.

India have some good news, even before they take the pitch for their Pool B encounter with Wales. Scotland have defeated Uruguay 3–1 in the preceding match of the evening, which means Uruguay end with three points and cannot overtake India. The Women In Blue are thus assured of a semi-final berth, while the Scots jump to the top (for now) with 7 points.

The teams are out on the pitch and being introduced currently. The national anthems will follow and pushback after that. Before play begins, here's a look at India's line-up tonight:

The game gets underway in Hyderabad. India, playing in blue tonight, attacking from right to left and Wales, in their red kit, going the other way in the first half.

India are up and running! It's a fantastic reverse hit from Sakshi Rana at the edge of the circle that beats the Wales goalie and hands the hosts the lead in the seventh minute.

India earn a glorious chance to double their lead as Sakshi sets up Ishika at the goalmouth with only Amy Hughes, the Wales custodian to dodge. But Ishika is foiled and the 10th-minute move comes to nothing.

The Women In Blue are relentless in attack as they garner their first penalty corner of the match in the 10th minute and Udita's drag flick is saved on the line by a Wales defender.

The hosts try hard to sneak another goal in before the hooter but are unable to. The first quarter ends with India possessing a slender but vital one-goal lead.

India continue to create chances in the second quarter, though their finishing is leaving Sjoerd Marijne unsatisfied. Before the match, the returning coach had said that India had at least four clear chances against Scotland that they spurned in the 2-2 draw. It's something the team needs to rectify urgently.

India captain Salima Tete finds a Welsh foot in the circle in the 27th minute to earn the team another penalty corner. Manisha it is, with the drag flick this time, and her shot flies wide of the right corner.

India double their lead in the 29th minute! After fetching their third penalty corner, the hosts turn to the experienced Navneet Kaur for the drag flick and she delivers. Her low shot just about trickles past Amy Hughes into the back of the net and India head into half time with their tails up.

The players return from the mid-game interval and the third quarter gets underway at the GMC Balayogi Hockey Ground. Wales earn an early penalty corner but India manage to ward off the threat.

Navneet has her second, and India their third! It's another penalty corner conversion from the hosts, in the 34th minute. Skipper Salima Tete's injection is precise and Navneet this time drills the ball into the right corner. India surging towards the top spot in Pool B!

Wales pull one back in the 39th minute! Betsan Thomas pounces on an error by Udita to slam the ball in and net a smart goal. India still possess a two-goal advantage.

The third quarter ends with India leading Wales by a 3-1 margin. After a short breather, the players return for the fourth and final 15-minute period. The Women In Blue are trying to find one more goal that would put their victory beyond doubt.

Wales miss a penalty stroke! India concede the stroke in the 50th minute with Sushila Chanu fouling Rachel Goodwin, and Elizabeth Bingham steps up to take the stroke. But her shot is a poor one, going well wide of Bichu Devi's goal. India heave a sigh of relief.

India make Wales pay! It's the home side's turn to earn a penalty stroke and Navneet steps up to the spot. Her shot ricochets off the inside of the post into the back of the net, and the 30-year-old completes her hat-trick in the 55th minute!

India try to slip in one more goal at the stroke of the hooter but miss out. At the end of the fourth quarter, they emerge victors by a comprehensive 4-1 margin to not only sail into the semi-finals, but also top Pool B (ahead of Scotland). The Women In Blue will next meet Italy in the second semi-final on March 13 at 7:30pm IST. They thus manage to avoid England, the highest-ranked team of the tournament.
