India earned a penalty corner after the ball struck a Korean defender’s foot, but their attempted variation failed to trouble the goalkeeper as the chance for a breakthrough went begging.
Brilliant stickwork from Abhishek earned India a penalty corner as he weaved past two Korean defenders in the circle before forcing a leg touch to draw the foul.
Sukhjeet produced a fine interception in midfield and quickly released Hardik, who showed superb control to glide past a defender before slotting the ball calmly into the bottom right corner to give India the lead.
Korea drew level after a video referral awarded them a penalty stroke for Jugraj’s push on Min Su Cheon’s low ball into the circle, and Jihun Yang made no mistake, firing it into the right corner to make it 1-1.
India conceded another penalty corner after Mandeep was penalised for deliberate foot contact, and Hyeonhong Kim made full use of it with a powerful strike into the top right corner to put Korea ahead.
India enjoyed a good spell of possession, with Jarmanpreet unleashing a shot from the edge of the circle that was smartly blocked by the Korean goalkeeper’s pads. Moments later, skipper Harmanpreet Singh was shown a green card for a dangerous challenge on a Korean attacker attempting to control a high ball, earning a two-minute suspension.
Korea controlled possession in the final minute of the second quarter, probing from the right flank but India’s defence stood firm to clear the danger. Just before the whistle, Harmanpreet Singh had a golden chance to level the scores, only to mistime his effort. With Korea holding a 2-1 lead at half-time, Craig Fulton’s side has work to do in the second half.
Abhishek found himself in a great position to score from close range, but the Korean goalkeeper charged out bravely, narrowing the angle and denying the Indian forward with a crucial save.
South Korea went upstairs for a penalty corner review, but the decision didn’t go their way as the referral was unsuccessful and play resumed without a PC.
Korea appeared content to control possession despite their one-goal lead, while India pressed aggressively for an equalizer. Sukhjeet carved out a golden opportunity with the goal wide open, but in a rushed attempt to pass to the far corner, he missed the target, squandering a chance that could have been set up for Abhishek.
Abhishek was left frustrated as another golden opportunity slipped away. Unmarked inside the D, he received a perfect pass from Hardik but fired across the goal and wide, a miss that could prove costly for the hosts. India earned a penalty corner in the final moments of the third quarter, but Harmanpreet Singh’s drag-flick was expertly blocked by Jinkang Rim, bringing the quarter to a close without a breakthrough.
Mandeep produced a stunning solo attempt, only to be denied by Korea goalkeeper Jaehan Kim’s brilliant save. India earned another penalty corner, with Hardik injecting and Jugraj’s drag-flick struck firmly into the body of Korea’s first-rusher.
Mandeep made no mistake with an open-goal finish, converting Sukhjeet’s precise assist into the far corner. The Korean goalkeeper had no chance as India leveled the scores.
Korea earned a penalty corner, leaving Harmanpreet frustrated as it yielded nothing. India attempted a counterattack, but it was well blocked, with the hosts retaining possession.
Sukhjeet met a long ball on the half-volley and fired a first-time shot, but it narrowly whistled past the goalpost, missing a golden chance.
That concludes India’s opening Super 4s match at the Men’s Asia Cup in Rajgir. Mandeep’s second-half strike ensured India shared the spoils with South Korea, despite a number of missed opportunities throughout the game.
