Stuttgart 2-1 Freiburg Highlights, DFB-Pokal: Tomas' Extra-Time Winner Sets Up Holders' Final Date With Bayern Munich

The match is underway at the MHPArena. Stuttgart kicking from left to right and Freiburg the other way in the first half. Both teams trying to find their feet early doors, with a heated atmosphere in the backdrop.

Stuttgart are the aggressors in the initial exchanges, striving to create openings and go for goal via long balls. In the seventh minute, Ermedin Demirovic frees Deniz Undav, who takes a crack at goal from outside the box but shoots over the crossbar.

There have been four yellow cards already in this scrappy encounter, which is more than the number of shots on goal (three). Pretty much sums up the state of play so far.

Freiburg take the lead! Matthias Ginter heads in a corner towards the goalmouth where Maximilian Eggestein gets the lightest of touches with his left foot, enough to beat the keeper and peg back the hosts.

Stuttgart are fervently trying to equalise. Ermedin Demirovic misses out from the centre of the box after being assisted by Deniz Undav. Two minutes later, Jamie Leweling aims at the far post from his left foot but narrowly misses. Two minutes added to the first half, meanwhile.

Deniz Undav denied at the goalmouth! Igor Matanovic defends resolutely, blocking the Stuttgart forward's powerful shot by sticking his right foot out. The referee blows the whistle after three-odd additional minutes, and Maximilian Eggestein's 28th-minute strike separates the teams at half-time.

The players return from the lemon break and Stuttgart get the game back underway for the second half. The hosts are now kicking from right to left and Freiburg the other way.

Yesterday night, Harry Kane and Luis Diaz fired Bayern Munich into the DFB-Pokal final with a 2-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen. Kane’s first-half strike – his 52nd goal of the season across all competitions for his club – and a goal from Diaz in stoppage time were enough for Bayern to advance to a final in Berlin’s Olympiastadion on May 23. It will be Bayern’s first appearance in the final since beating Leverkusen 4-2 to seal a domestic double in 2000.

Stuttgart draw level! And it's via a banger of a goal from Undav. It all begins with a defensive clearance and a fast counter. Bilal El Khannouss breaks away and surges towards the Freiburg goal before passing it to Undav on his right, who unleashes a splendid right footed shot on first touch.

We are getting closer and closer to extra time in this semi-final, unless either side can break the deadlock in the dying minutes. Undav comes close with another right-footed attempt that dribbles wide of the far post.

After five minutes of added time, the referee blows the whistle and it ends 1-1 in regulation time. We are now headed for extra time, that is two halves of 15 minutes each, to try and decide a winner. If none emerges, penalties beckon.

The first half of extra time begins and there are chances at either end straightaway. Lucas Holer puts it in the back of the net but the referee disallows it for a foul, a shoulder charge on a Stuttgart defender, before he netted. Quite an eventful start to extra time!

Chris Fuhrich hits the post! It's the second time in the night that a Stuttgart shot goes off the woodwork, much to the home fans' dismay. Maximilian Mittelstadt tries to take another crack following the rebound but his attempt goes wide.

After much push and pull, the first half of added time ends with no change to the scoreline. Stuttgart seemed to be pushing harder for an outright win, while Freiburg were more intent with lucky breaks in the past 15 minutes.

The second half of added time has kicked off in a similar vein, with Stuttgart on the offence and Freiburg warding off the threats. Nine more minutes to go before a possible penalty shootout.

Tiago Tomas!! The Portuguese forward puts Stuttgart on the verge of a final berth with his 119th-minute strike. Tomas directs Badredine Bouanan's ball into the goal superbly to spark off wild celebrations among the fans. Three minutes of added time still to go, however.

There it is! Stuttgart survive the three added minutes and erupt in joy, for they win the gruelling semi-final 2-1 in extra time to march into their second consecutive German Cup final. The holders will meet Bayern Munich in Berlin’s Olympiastadion on May 23 in the title clash.
