However, recent results have favoured the visitors, with Villa winning their last two encounters against Spurs - although both were at home.

The last time Aston Villa won away against Spurs was in November 2023, with goals from Pau Torres and Ollie Watkins earning them a 2-1 comeback win.

Tottenham Hotspur are unbeaten in their last seven matches, while Aston Villa haven't lost in their last five games.

The pre-match formalities are done. Referee Simon Hooper blows his whistle, and Aston Villa get today's match underway on a rainy day in North London. Can Spurs establish their early title credentials and put pressure on Arsenal with a win? Stay tuned!

Not much of note has happened in the early stages, but it has been quite a physical start to this match. A cross from Cash is deep inside the Spurs box but evades all his teammates. Good start from the visitors, though.

Only four and a half minutes on the clock, and Spurs have taken the lead. A cross is only partially cleared by Villa, and it falls to Spence. The full-back plays it to Kudus on the left, who whips in a peach of a delivery with his left foot. Palhinha does very well to head it back towards the middle, where Bentancur fires it past Martinez to give his side the lead.

Oh, that was close! A superb delivery from van de Ven from near his own penalty box found the run of Kudus. The Ghanian took it in his stride, and holding off the pressure from his marker, finished past Martinez and found the back of the net.

However, his celebration is cut short as the flag goes up for offside, which he was, by a metre or so.

A corner in Spurs' almost found the head of the tall Villa defenders, but other than that, it has been easy going for the home side. They have the slightest bit more of the ball (51%), and are more or less controlling the tempo of the match.

A ball from Guessand found Cash - with Hooper playing advantage. However, full-back's shot is dragged wide, even if Vicario was at full stretch. The pair have combined well on the flanks for the visitors, with Aston Villa seeing more of the ball.

However, they need to be careful with their high backline, with Tel almost running timing his run perfectly but failed to do so.

A couple of bad fouls sees van de Ven see the first yellow card of the match, even though Villa would have preferred to play on.

Spurs, meanwhile, push forward with Tel finding Odobert on the edge of the box. There was a tangling between him and Onana right on the edge of the box, wit the Spurs forward claiming a penalty. No dice.

A shot from Odobert from the edge of the box should have been a routine stop for Martinez, but the Argentina goalkeeper spilled it. Luckily, he grabbed on to it again before any danger arrived. Spurs are on the ascendancy here.

Tel has been lively down the left flanks, and the Frenchman tried to cut inside before being robbed of the ball by a Villa defender. Onana receives some treatment after going down in pain.

Meanwhile, a lobbed pass towards Guessand almost found the forward, but Vicario came rushing out to clear the danger. A few moments later, Villa manage to get behind the Spurs backline, and Onana almost got at the end of Digne's cross but Vicario cleared.

What a hit!! That is something special from Morgan Rogers, and Aston Villa are level. Cash and Guessand combine down the right, with the latter trying to find Rogers. A ricochet off a defender's leg finds the Villa player, who takes it on to his right and fired off a superb shot that found the top corner.

After going down in pain – having seemingly twisted his ankle – Rogers gets some attention from the physios. Spurs, meanwhile, have a free-kick, which Porro hits straight at the referee. Hooper let's play continue, and the ball still finds Kudus, whose cross into the box almost found Tel. Aston Villa, needless to say, are not happy with the referee.

Morgan Rogers, meanwhile, is back on the pitch.

With the scores still level at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the fourth official holds up his board to indicate a minimum of five minutes to be added on. Is there a late goal in the cards in the first half?

A half-chance for van de Ven, whose header from inside the box was over the bar. Other than that, there was a half-hearted penalty appeal as Porro's cross was blocked in the box, but VAR found no handball in the process.

After five minutes of stoppage time, Simon Hooper brings the first half to an end. A crucial second half lies in wait.

Both sets of players are out on the pitch, and Spurs gets the second half rolling. No half-time changes for either side, and Rogers looks fine to continue after his injury scare at the end stages of the first half.

Digne goes down in considerable pain after a coming together with Danso. VAR ruled that there was no malice behind the collission, but the left-back receives lengthy treatment on the pitch. However, he is eventually alright to continue.

A long throw in the Villa box from Danso was almost poked home by Odobert, but Konsa makes an important block. Spurs appeal for handball, but Hooper says that Konsa's hands were close to his chest.

Moments later, Spurs push ahead against, and Palhinha has a shot from outside the box that curled just wide of the post, helped by Martinez's fingertips.

The first change of the match for Tottenham, with Tel – who has been ineffective today – coming off for Richarlison. Meanwhile, Villa bring on Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Buendia, replacing Mallen and Guessand. Can the fresh legs be the difference for either teams?

Another terrific long throw from Danso almost catches Martinez by surprise. The goalkeeper, having rushed out to clear, slipped, but thankfully, the defence gets the danger away. Danso, meanwhile, earns a booking after a foul.

A cross from Cash is cleared behind for a corner, which is taken by Digne. His ball into the box is cleared, but Villa take possession. A long ball from their own half is received by Digne in stunning fashion, and he lays it for Buendia.

The Argentine takes an extra touch and then has a shot with his left from the edge of the box. The curling effort gives Martinez no chance, finding the top corner.

After Spurs bring on Bergvall and Kolo Muani, Villa make their own double change. Ross Barkley comes on in place of Onana, and Maatsen replaces Digne.

With time running out for Spurs, Thomas Frank make another double change. Benatancur and Spence are off, and on come Pape Matar Sarr and Brennan Johnson. It's all out attack for the home side in the final four minutes plus stoppage time.

The fourth official indicates a minimum of ... minutes to be added on at the end of regulation time. That's how long Spurs have to make a comeback and get at least a point from this contest. Villa, on the other hand, will look to take all three points back to West Midlands.

Despite sustained pressure from Spurs, Aston Villa did exceedingly well to hold on to their lead. The visitors even slightly threatened Spurs going forward, with Kamara almost being played through on the counter. Johnson, meanwhile, saw his shot from inside the box fly over the bar.

However, there's no late drama tonight, and the match ends 2-1 to Aston Villa's favour.
