The whistle blows and we’re off! San Diego FC and Vancouver Whitecaps are underway, and it’s already heating up. Just a minute in, Aníbal Godoy goes in a bit too eager and concedes a foul.
Vancouver’s Emmanuel Sabbi steps up and wins a free kick in a dangerous spot, early signs of intent from the visitors. The first half is officially rolling.
And we’ve got an early breakthrough! Just eight minutes in, Vancouver Whitecaps strike first. Brian White sneaks in at close range and rifles a shot into the bottom right corner, thanks to a slick assist from Andrés Cubas. San Diego are stunned, Vancouver are already up 1-0, and the crowd is on their toes.
Whoa! Things are spiraling for San Diego early on. Just three minutes after White’s opener, disaster strikes, Pablo Sisniega puts one in his own net. Vancouver Whitecaps double their lead to 2-0, and San Diego are reeling. What a nightmare start for the home side.
The game’s tempo is swinging a bit now. At the 20th minute, Sebastian Berhalter tries his luck from outside the box, but Pablo Sisniega redeems himself with a sharp save to keep SDFC in it.
A couple of minutes later, Andrés Cubas goes in a little too rough and concedes a foul, SDFC getting a bit of breathing room here.
Vancouver are keeping possession tight, and at the 27th minute, Ralph Priso wins a free kick in his own half. Whitecaps are looking calm and composed, building patiently from the back while SDFC try to find a way back into the game.
SDFC finally push forward, 31 minutes in, Anibal Godoy earns a free kick in a promising spot. The Wave are sniffing an opening, hoping to pull one back before halftime while the Whitecaps stay alert at the back.
Pressure’s mounting for Vancouver! In the 36th minute, SDFC win a corner after Thomas Müller is caught out, and Jeppe Tverskov rises for a header, but it’s blocked. Anders Dreyer’s teasing cross had set it up perfectly, but the Whitecaps’ defense holds firm.
SDFC keep knocking on the door, 39 minutes in, Manu Duah wins a free kick in a dangerous area. The Wave are hungry for a breakthrough, and the stadium buzzes as they line up to test the Whitecaps’ defense once more.
And just before halftime, Vancouver put the game completely out of reach! In the 45'+2' minute, Brian White strikes again from close range, slotting it into the bottom left corner thanks to a clever assist from Ali Ahmed. SDFC head into the break staring at a 3-0 deficit, Whitecaps have been ruthless in this first half.
And that’s the whistle on a stunning first half! SDFC trail 3-0 as the teams head into the break. Vancouver Whitecaps have dominated from start to finish, leaving the Wave with plenty to think about if they want a comeback in the second half.
SDFC finally spark to life! In the 60th minute, Hirving Lozano unleashes a rocket from outside the box, smashing it high into the centre of the net. Anders Dreyer slips him the assist, and suddenly the Wave have a pulse. It’s 3-1, and the crowd erupts, game on?
Momentum is flickering back and forth now. At 68 minutes, Ali Ahmed tries to answer back for the Whitecaps with a right-footer from distance, but it whistles wide of the post.
Just a few minutes later, at 71', Hirving Lozano drops deep and wins a free kick, calming things down for SDFC as they look to build again. The Wave are alive, but Vancouver still carry plenty of threat.
SDFC almost light up the stadium in the 89th minute! Manu Duah meets a lovely cross from Christopher McVey right in the heart of the box and fires a clean right-footer toward the top corner, but Yohei Takaoka stretches and pulls off a brilliant save. That’s a keeper refusing to let this one get interesting late on.
Deep into stoppage time and SDFC are still swinging. At 90'+6', Jeppe Tverskov connects cleanly from the middle of the box after another sharp cross from Anders Dreyer, but Yohei Takaoka stands tall yet again and smothers it right in the centre of the goal. The Wave keep pushing, but the Whitecaps' keeper just won’t budge.
