Check out East Bengal's line-up before the match kicks off:
Historically, Mumbai City have held the upper hand in this fixture, winning six of their 10 ISL meetings against East Bengal. The Red and Gold Brigade have registered just one victory, while three matches ended in draws. Mumbai have also outscored their opponents 12 to 3 across those encounters.
But the most recent meeting between the sides, played at the Mumbai Football Arena on January 31, 2025, ended in a goalless draw.
Play is underway at the Mumbai Football Arena. Mumbai City, in their all-blue attire, kicking from left to right and the 'Red and Gold' East Bengal going the other way in the first half. Let's see how this one transpires.
Mumbai City take the lead in the eighth minute! All the early offensive pressure comes good for the Islanders, as Akash Mishra's long throw-in finds Brandon Fernandes, who pile-drives it into the ground but the bounce is awkward enough for Prabhsukhan Gill to be beaten in the East Bengal goal.
Mumbai City midfielder Puipuia is shown the first yellow card of the evening for a foul on East Bengal midfielder Vishnu. One gets the feeling that there will be more bookings, given the frequency of contentious tackles so far.
A second yellow card for Mumbai City, and this time it is for someone outside the pitch: reserve goalkeeper TP Rehenesh. The referee books him for protesting a decision vehemently.
After four minutes of added time, the referee brings the first half to an end. Brandon Fernandes' eighth-minute strike separates the two teams, going into the mid-game interval.
The players are back from the lemon break and the second half kicks off, with Mumbai City kicking from right to left and East Bengal the other way now. Three changes for the visitors: Miguel Figueira, Souvik Chakraborty and Youssef Ezzejjari are in for Mohammed Rashid, Jerry Mawihmingthanga and Anton Sojberg.
East Bengal have their equaliser! After some urgent football in the first few minutes of the second half, the Torch Bearers get their reward in the form of a penalty. Joni Kauko fouls Miguel Figueira and the referee points to the spot.
Ezzejjari steps up to take it, and drives the spot kick into the left corner. Mumbai City goalie Phurba Lachenpa guesses right but is unable to get to the shot in time. What's more, he earns a yellow card soon after for arguing with the referee.
East Bengal now take the lead! Quite a turnaround in the second half for the visitors, with the substitutions working well for Oscar Bruzon. Entering the pitch in the 56th minute, Nandhakumar initiates a searing run down the left flank before drifting inwards. He takes a shot from distance which takes a deflection off a Mumbai City defender and nestles into the goal!
The regulation 90 minutes are up and nine minutes have been added to the second half as stoppage time. That's enough for the Islanders to try and find an equaliser, which they desperately need to keep their title hopes alive.
The referee finally calls time on the second half after 11-plus added minutes amid frantic Mumbai City efforts and standard time-wasting tactics from East Bengal. The Red and Gold Brigade hold on to their slender 2-1 lead and eke out three full points that take them level with table-toppers Jamshedpur FC.
As for the Islanders, their title hopes are hanging by a thread after this setback at home.
