The international friendly between Mexico and Australia is officially underway at the Rose Bowl Pasadena, California.
Mexico start the match on a positive note and earns a corner after Jackson Irvine gives away possession. Luis Chavez's left-footer from outside the box is blocked before Johan Vasquez makes a close-range effort which is successfully defended by the Australian defence.
Mexico keep pressing forward as Alvaro Fidalgo's right-footer from outside the D is stopped by Australia's defense. The deflection has send the ball behind and resultantly Mexico get a corner.
Goaaalll...! Mexico draw the first as Johan Vasquez rises high to a meet Alexis Vega's corner kick and guides it into the bottom left corner with a header. Mexico take 1-0 lead in the match.
That's the halftime whistle and with it the stoppage time comes to an end. Both set of players are heading back to the locker rooms for the break. Mexico is leading by 1-0 courtesy of a timely header by Johan Vasquez.
Both set of players are on the field for the final half of the game. Mexico make two substitutions:
Cesar Huerta replaces Orbelin Pineda.
Israel Reyes replaces Jorge Sanchez.
Souttar moves in to meet a dangerous curling cross from O'Neill but Fidalgo manages to a get a touch on the ball and deflects it behind the post for a corner to Mexico. Metcalfe's first corner is poorly delivered, and he then makes matters worse by sending the second ball out of play.
Souttar commits a foul just outside the penalty area that gives Mexico a free kick and they turns it into a goal but the referee disallows the goals as he was still organizing Australia's defensive wall. The frustration of the decision is evident on the faces of the Mexican players but that's the nature of sport.
Mexico deservedly took a 1-0 lead into halftime after controlling the first half, while Australia responded strongly after the break but squandered their best chances. The win extended Mexico's impressive 2026 record to six clean sheets in seven matches, while Australia slumped to a fourth straight away defeat and a third consecutive road game without a goal.
