Ruben Amorim believes Bruno Fernandes "will have more help this season" from Manchester United's new signings, following his brace in their 2-1 victory over West Ham.

The Red Devils made a winning start to the Premier League Summer Series at MetLife Stadium, where Fernandes opened the scoring with a fifth-minute penalty after Alphonse Areola fouled Ayden Heaven.

Man Utd's skipper doubled the lead seven minutes into the second half, punishing a loose Areola pass by bending into the far corner.

Jarrod Bowen rounded off a sweeping move to pull a goal back for West Ham in the 63rd minute, but it was not enough to deny Amorim's side victory.

Fernandes' form was a rare highlight during a difficult 2024-25 season for Man Utd, registering 18 direct goal involvements in the Premier League (eight goals, 10 assists) and leading them to the Europa League final.

The Red Devils have bolstered their attacking options with the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who Amorim thinks will enable his skipper to flourish even more this term.

"I think now he has more players to help him to lead the group and that is a good thing," the head coach said of Fernandes.

"He is our leader and really important, not just on the field, but off the field. He leads by example. He works really hard, is always available and, sometimes, he plays with pain.

"Sometimes, he wants to help the team-mates so much, it is not the best thing to do. They have to do their job and Bruno has, for example, to wait for the ball.

"Last year, I sometimes felt I pushed him back to have more possession in the build-up, and we missed Bruno near the box. With different characteristics from Bryan [Mbeumo] and Matheus Cunha - and I really like Kobbie Mainoo's game - he will have more help this season."

Fernandes, meanwhile, was pleased to see Man Utd chalk up their first victory of pre-season, which began with a goalless draw with Leeds United last weekend.

"Training has been very good. We have been doing very well," he said. "It's good to win the game - even with it being a friendly - and to go into the season in a positive way.

"Overall, the game was good. We were good on the ball. In some moments, we could have kept possession for longer as the manager was asking - we rushed a bit in the final third when trying to score our goals. We will work on that."
