Napoli have confirmed that Kevin De Bruyne has undergone surgery on his right hamstring and will be sidelined for up to four months.

The midfielder suffered the injury while scoring a penalty in Napoli's 3-1 win against Inter, and was seen leaving the stadium on crutches.

De Bruyne has scored four goals in eight Serie A matches this season and has also provided two assists in three Champions League games.

Napoli confirmed the 34-year-old will complete his rehab in his native Belgium after the club's sports coordinator revealed on Tuesday that De Bruyne is expected to be out for three to four months.

The club statement said: "As scheduled, Kevin De Bruyne underwent surgery today in Antwerp following a high-grade tear to his right thigh muscle.

"The surgery was a complete success. De Bruyne, assisted during the operation by the head of the Italian medical staff, Dr. Raffaele Canonico, will continue the first post-surgical phase of his rehabilitation in Belgium."

Along with missing key Champions League fixtures for Napoli, De Bruyne will also be out for Belgium's final two World Cup qualifying matches.

However, Rudi Garcia's side are already top of Group J and face Kazakhstan and Liechtenstein in the November international break.
