India and Japan have faced each other just once in women’s international football. That came during an Olympic Games qualifier in October 2023, where Japan thrashed India 7-0, with six goals coming in the second half.

India lost 1-2 against Vietnam after conceding a last-minute goal. They conceded a goal in the first half but came back strong in the second half by scoring the equaliser. But they couldn't hold on as Vietnam scalped the winner in the added time.
The match is underway with the kick-off and Japan are building up the play from the back. India has immediately dropped to their structure of 4-4-2 and are aiming to not concede a goal early in the game. Japan will test their endurance.
India concede a goal just in the fourth minute. Japan establish their authority quickly in the first half and break the Indian defiance through a solo effort. Yuzuki Yamamoto receives the ball, cuts in and then lands a curling left-footed shot past Panthoi's hands. Quick lead for Japan.
Japan keep piercing India with their combination play in the attacking third. India are down to their own box and Japan are controlling the game. They score their second just in the 13th minute as Yui Hasegawa slots in a cut back from Yuzuki Yamamoto. Yamamoto has been a menace at the left side of the Team India defence and she creates a goal this time for Hasegawa. India are fading away from the game.
The third one comes from Japan is absolutely no time. They have been putting in crosses and cut backs from both wings and India are defending desperately. This time Yui Hasegawa receives a ball in the box with her back to the goal, taking no time to turn, she sets it up for Hinata Miyazawa, who easily slots in the ball to the top left corner. Japan are dominant here.
Japan keep on scoring. Fourth one in and India are in absolute shambles. Fluid moment of play from Japan. Mina Tanaka receives the ball at the top of the box and as an Indian defender follows her, she back heels the ball through the feet of Miyazaki who wins the one vs one against Panthoi. Slots it inside the net and quadruples the lead.
Another goal from Japan. This time India concedes a penalty which gets converted by Kiko Seike. India were defending a corner when Sweety Devi pushed Saki Kumagai in the back while she was jumping. Referee pointed towards the spot and Seike put Panthoi on the wrong side to put the ball at the back of the net. Japan are pushing India into the oblivion now.
There is the much-needed whistle from the referee and the India players will be relieved. It has been a painful first half from them where they could barely take the ball outside their own half. Manisha Kalyan has remain stranded in front while India kept defending deep. Despite that Japan has sliced through them and scored 5 goals without any response. Hopes are not high for the second half but the Indian team will need to regroup and put up as much resilience as possible.
The second half opens with two goals from Japan. Both coming from Riko Ueki. Ueki scored their sixth with her first touch of the match and now the seventh to extend their lead further. Once again a Japan attack in India's box forces Indian defence to retaliate and the second ball falls to Riko Ueki outside the box, whose dipping shot beats Panthoi's diving attempt due to the bounce. A soft goal conceded by India and they are on their knees.
Another one enters the net. Three goals within fifteen minutes and India are breaking apart in pieces. The ball comes in from the left side, Panthoi dives and punches it but the ball falls gently to the on rushing Kiko Seike, who sends the ball home into the goal. Japan take their dominance to the next level.
Japan score another. They are nearing the double-digit mark now. Yuzuki Yamamoto receives the ball wide, drives in and puts in a weighted ball to the path of Maya Hijikata who heads the ball home into the goal beyond the reach of Panthoi. The dominance of Japan continues.
Double digit now for Japan. They are scoring at will against the Indian side. This time it is Riko Ueki again who scores. A cross at the left side of the Indian goal. Both the defender and Panthoi come to meet it, but Ueki reaches it first flick heads it in to the net. India are in a dire spot with 25 minutes of play still remaining.
After a gap where Japan couldn't score a goal, they put another one in to extend the lead to 11 goals. It is Hinata Miyazawa who scores her third and completes her hat-trick. A beautiful ball put in from the right side and Miyazawa stretches to get to the end of it and put it past Panthoi. India are clutching straws at this point.
The extreme one-sided match finally comes to an end with the final whistle and with it India remain at the bottom of the Group C table. India couldn't register a single attack on the Japan goal and never entered their penalty box. The ball always stayed in the India half and around the box and Japan kept piling on goals after goals. Riko Ueki scored a hat-trick within 20 minutes of coming on as a sub. Yuzuki Yamamoto and Hinata Miyazawa also dominated the Indian defence. A forgettable evening for Amelia Valverde and her side. The coach will now have to motivate her side to arrive with full confidence against Taipei. Meanwhile, with this win, Japan are through from Group C. India can still qualify if they beat Chinese Taipei by more than one goal.
