AND WE ARE OFF!
The whistle blows and the first half is underway, barely a minute on the clock and Newcastle United are already flying into it. But hold on. Nick Woltemade comes charging in a little too enthusiastically and the referee isn’t having any of it. Early whistle, early foul.
Two minutes gone and you can already feel the tempo. Newcastle aren’t easing themselves into this, they’re setting the tone straight away. This one’s kicked off with bite. Stay with me, we’re just getting started.
Fourteen minutes on the clock and Villa Park erupts. Aston Villa take the lead through Tammy Abraham after a sharp set-piece routine.
Newcastle fail to deal with the second phase, Douglas Luiz threads a perfectly weighted through ball into the box, and Abraham makes no mistake, a composed right-footed finish from the centre sends it straight down the middle. Newcastle are caught flat-footed, Villa are clinical, and it’s 1-0 to the hosts.
Twenty minutes gone and Villa are knocking hard on the door for a second. Rogers surges straight through the Newcastle midfield with real intent, pushing the visitors onto the back foot before the move is shifted wide to Bailey.
It opens up for a moment, but the ball gets tangled under his feet and the pull-back towards Abraham is blocked at the crucial second. The rebound falls invitingly for Ross Barkley, yet he can’t sort his feet out either and the effort is miscued.
To make matters worse for Villa, Abraham looks to have taken a knock in the scramble and heads to the sideline for treatment. Newcastle are hanging on here.
Twenty-five minutes in and Newcastle finally get a caution. Malick Thiaw is shown yellow for a reckless challenge, bringing the referee down on him after a heavy foul. Villa now have a little more breathing room and a free-kick chance to test Newcastle’s defence. Tension is building, and the early fouls are stacking up.
Thirty-five minutes gone and Villa are still clinging to their 1-0 lead. Newcastle carve out a good opening as Barnes links up with Osula in a slick one-two, slipping in behind the Villa defence inside the box.
The chance is there, but Barnes can’t quite get his foot around it, and the effort drifts just wide into the side netting. Bizot had left a sliver of space at his near post, but Newcastle can’t make it count, a let-off for Villa.
And just before the break, chaos erupts at Villa Park. Marco Bizot is sent off! The goalkeeper is shown a straight red, leaving Aston Villa down to ten men heading into halftime.
Newcastle suddenly have a massive lifeline, and the momentum could shift dramatically in the second half. It’s 1-0 to Villa, but everything just got a lot more complicated for the hosts.
Half-time at Villa Park and it’s Villa 1, Magpies 0. Despite going down to ten men after Bizot’s red, Villa have managed to hang on to their slender lead. The Magpies will be regrouping and looking to pounce in the second half, but Villa head into the break clinging to that crucial opener.
Early into the second half and Newcastle are probing for an equaliser. A corner routine leaves Barnes with far too much space just outside the Villa box, but his shot is crowded out and fails to find a way through the sea of players. Villa survive the scare, still clinging to their 1-0 lead.
Fifty-five minutes on the clock and the fouls keep coming. Jacob Ramsey picks up a yellow for a reckless challenge, putting the Magpies on notice. Villa have a chance to capitalize on the set-piece, while Newcastle now need to tread carefully to avoid falling further behind.
Newcastle have leveled! Sandro Tonali finds the net with a brilliant strike from outside the box following a set-piece. His right-footed shot bends perfectly into the bottom left corner, leaving Villa helpless and the score tied at 1-1. With Bizot already off, the Magpies are riding a wave of momentum, and this one is wide open.
Newcastle take the lead! Sandro Tonali is at it again, this time receiving a precise pass from Dan Burn. He unleashes a right-footed strike from outside the box that sails into the bottom left corner, giving Villa no chance. The Magpies are ahead 2-1, and the atmosphere has completely turned at Villa Park.
Newcastle almost make it three as Harvey Barnes lets fly from the centre of the box, but his left-footed effort is blocked. Villa survive once more, keeping the score at 2-1.
Newcastle put the game beyond doubt. Nick Woltemade finishes with precision from the centre of the box, curling a right-footed shot into the top left corner. The Magpies lead 3-1, and Villa are now staring down a heavy defeat.
Four minutes of added time have been signalled by the fourth official. Villa will be hoping for a late miracle, but Newcastle look firmly in control as they aim to see out the final moments.
That’s a wrap from Villa Park! Newcastle Magpies march into the fifth round, and we’ll be back with more live action soon. Until then, goodbye and thanks for following along.
