Right-handed opener Prithvi Shaw has moved to the Maharashtra team for the upcoming 2025-26 domestic season, bringing an end to his long association with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).
Shaw, who had obtained a no-objection certificate (NOC) from Mumbai, expressed optimism about this fresh chapter in his cricketing career.
Shaw’s move comes after a challenging period in his career, where his batting form and fitness became matters of concern. He was dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad last season before making a brief return during their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) title run, scoring 197 runs in nine games at a strike rate of 156.34. However, he was not included in their Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) campaign.
Despite a promising early career — including a Test debut century against the West Indies in Rajkot and captaining India to victory at the 2018 U19 World Cup — Shaw has struggled to regain consistency. His IPL career also hit a roadblock after being released by Delhi Capitals and going unsold at the 2025 mega auction.
Looking ahead, Shaw is expected to feature in the ongoing D.B. Deodhar Tournament, an intra-state competition that plays a key role in Maharashtra’s domestic selections.
Maharashtra Cricket Association President Rohit Pawar welcomed Shaw to the team, stating, "We are delighted to welcome a player of Prithvi Shaw’s calibre to the Maharashtra team. His inclusion adds tremendous strength to an already talented squad comprising experienced players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ankit Bawne, Rahul Tripathi, Mukesh Choudhary, and Rajneesh Gurbani.
"Shaw’s international and IPL experience will be invaluable, especially for mentoring younger players in the squad. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the MCA Apex Council and the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) for supporting this decision. Maharashtra Cricket Association stands firmly behind Prithvi in his new journey, and we wish him the very best for the seasons ahead."
In his statement to Mumbai Cricket Association, Shaw said, "At this stage of my career, I believe joining the Maharashtra team will help me grow further as a cricketer. I am deeply grateful to the Mumbai Cricket Association for the opportunities and support I have received over the years. Maharashtra Cricket Association has made remarkable efforts in recent years to enhance cricketing infrastructure across the state."
