New Zealand bowlers were making life hard for Pakistani batters when rain arrived and did not allow any further play. Pakistan were reduced to 80 for five within 20 overs. When the game stopped, Pakistan had scored 92 runs after losing five wickets in 25 overs.

Rain relented a few times, triggering hopes of a restart or even a truncated game. However, it returned soon to spoil the game which is now the fourth game of the tournament to be abandoned. All four of these washouts have come at Colombo's R Premadasa Stadium.

Three of the last five matches in the ongoing World Cup have now seen no abandonments due to rain.
