Summary
  • Azan Awais was dismissed off the first ball, creating an unwanted first in Pakistan’s Test history

  • Pakistan were bowled out for 171 as Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue claimed five wickets each

  • The visitors now face an uphill task against England in the opening Test at Headingley

Pakistan’s troubled start to the opening Test against England at Headingley brought another unwanted chapter in their recent cricketing journey, as the visitors found themselves on the wrong side of a rare statistical first.

The moment came immediately at the start of Pakistan’s innings. Opener Azan Awais was dismissed off the very first ball of the Test, becoming the first Pakistan batter to fall on the opening delivery of a Test series. Ollie Robinson produced the breakthrough as England struck before Pakistan could get off the mark, setting the tone for a difficult opening day in Leeds.

Pakistan’s innings never truly recovered from that early blow. Robinson and Josh Tongue ran through the batting order, sharing all 10 wickets between them as Pakistan were bowled out for 171 after England captain Joe Root opted to field first. Both fast bowlers finished with five-wicket hauls, leaving the visitors with plenty to reflect on after their first day of the three-Test series.

A First-Ball Dismissal And A Record Pakistan Did Not Want

For Azan Awais, the dismissal was particularly harsh. An opener's job is often about surviving the first burst, reading the conditions and gradually settling into the innings. Awais, however, did not get that opportunity.

The wicket also placed him in an unwanted piece of Pakistan cricket history. While Pakistan have endured plenty of difficult starts over the years, no batter from the side had previously been dismissed off the very first ball of a Test series. The incident underlined the scale of England’s early dominance and immediately put Pakistan under pressure.

From Caribbean Recovery To Fresh Trouble In England

The Headingley setback came just weeks after Pakistan had found a much-needed positive result in the West Indies. Pakistan defeated West Indies by eight wickets in Trinidad to level that series 1-1, with Abdullah Shafique’s unbeaten 160 playing a major role in ending the team's three-year wait for an away Test victory.

However, the England tour has presented a fresh challenge, and Pakistan began it without regular captain Babar Azam, who was ruled out of the first Test because of a hand injury. Salman Ali Agha was handed the captaincy in his absence.

Pakistan now face an uphill battle at Headingley. The first-ball wicket may have created an unwanted record, but the larger concern for Salman and his side is whether they can recover quickly enough to prevent England from taking complete control of the opening Test.
