But the mood changed dramatically after lunch. Facing Keshara Nuwantha’s very first ball of the session, Pant charged down the pitch and attempted another big hit. He got too close to the flighted delivery and hit it flat towards deep mid-off, where Lahiru Udara completed a sharp catch.
It was a dismissal that left Pant disappointed. Set on 63 and looking capable of taking India well beyond 400, he had the opportunity to build a truly big innings but instead gifted Sri Lanka the breakthrough they desperately needed.
The frustration was visible immediately. Pant looked devastated after returning to the dugout, sitting with a visibly disappointed expression before eventually heading into the dressing room.
