India will aim to seal a 2-0 series win when they face Sri Lanka in the second and final Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo from August 23.
The visitors produced a clinical performance in Galle to win the opening Test by 165 runs, but the hosts return with a reshuffled squad and a point to prove. Sri Lanka have lost two experienced batters, while India will be keen to address some of the weaknesses that surfaced despite their dominant victory.
Sri Lanka's batting will be under particular scrutiny after Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis were ruled out. Chandimal suffered a concussion during the first Test, while Mendis is unavailable for the rest of the series because of a hamstring injury picked up during the Lanka Premier League.
Asan Arachchige and Kamil Mishara have been brought into the squad, with Arachchige earning his opportunity after scoring 127 for Sri Lanka A against India A in an unofficial Test.
Mishara, meanwhile, has been rewarded for his performances in the 2026 Lanka Premier League and Major Club T20s. With Pathum Nissanka also absent, Sri Lanka will have to find runs from a relatively inexperienced middle order.
India's captain Shubman Gill will also have a personal battle to address in Colombo. Gill spent an extended period at training on Friday working against left-arm spin after Prabath Jayasuriya dismissed him twice in Galle.
He scored 16 in the first innings and eight in the second, highlighting an area that has troubled him throughout his Test career. Gill has now been dismissed 11 times by left-arm spinners in 42 Tests, and his difficulty in covering the line against orthodox left-armers was again exposed in Galle.
At the SSC nets, he faced Manav Suthar, Ravindra Jadeja and local bowlers as he worked on tightening his technique against the variation.
The pitch will be another major talking point. Sri Lanka may have little incentive to prepare an extreme turner, particularly with their inexperienced batting line-up, and the expectation is for a surface that offers a more even contest between bat and ball.
Galle produced a relatively balanced pitch before natural wear gradually brought the spinners into the game. The SSC has lost some of its reputation as a Sri Lankan fortress, making the first-innings total potentially decisive if the Colombo surface remains good for batting.
India have plenty of positives to take into the second Test. Devdutt Padikkal made a powerful case for a permanent place at No. 3 with his maiden Test century and a 167-run knock, while Manav Suthar's 10-wicket match haul was one of the biggest highlights of the victory.
KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel also made important contributions, while India's pace attack provided valuable support. The win lifted India's WTC 2025-26 points percentage from 48.15 to 53.33, although they remain fifth in the standings.
With a demanding schedule against New Zealand and Australia still ahead, India will want to finish the Sri Lanka series unbeaten and use the Colombo Test to strengthen both their WTC campaign and their long-term Test combination.
