Even after completing his maiden Test double hundred, Shubman Gill kept going and batted with composure to demolish more records during the second day of the second Test match between India and England. With his 222nd run of the innings, the new India Test captain surpassed the legendary Sunil Gavaskar to reach the highest individual score by an Indian on the English soil.

The 25-year-old reached his maiden Test double century in 311 balls. At the time of reaching the milestone, Gill has hit 23 fours and two sixes, as he dominated the English attack with class, composure, and precision.

In the process, Gill shattered several records. He became the first Asian captain to score a double century in a Test match in England. Gill now holds the record for the highest individual score by an Indian captain on English soil, surpassing Mohammad Azharuddin’s 179 at Old Trafford in 1990. He also got the record of the highest individual score for India in England in Tests, breaking long-standing record of legendary Sunil Gavaskar 221.

Gill also joined Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar as the only Indians to have got a double century in Tests in England. Having hit a double ton in just his third outing as captain, he matched Gavaskar as the joint-quickest for India to score double century as skipper of the side.

He joined another elite club of Indian captains with Test double hundreds. Before Gill, Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Sunil Gavaskar, and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi had achieved this feat. While everyone else on this list has a single double ton as captain, Kohli has seven.

Remarkably, Gill is now also the fourth Indian to have double centuries in both Tests and ODIs, alongside Rohit Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virender Sehwag. Chris Gayle is the only non-Indian in the list of players with double centuries in both ODIs and Tests.
