India: Smriti Mandhana, Pratika Rawal, Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh (wk), Deepti Sharma, Kashvee Gautam, Sree Charani, Kranti Gaud, Renuka Singh
Australia: Alyssa Healy (c), Phoebe Litchfield, Georgia Voll, Beth Mooney (wk), Annabel Sutherland, Ashleigh Gardner, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molienux, Alana King, Megan Schutt, Darcie Brown
India opener Pratika Rawal's much-awaited comeback to international cricket after her ankle injury does not offer much with the bat, as she falls to Megan Schutt's masterful swing-bowling. The second ball of the match is a sharp in-dipper that raps Rawal on the pads, bang in front and it's a duck for the prolific right-hander. Another rightie replaces her at the crease in the form of Shafali Verma, and it's a wicket maiden from Schutt first up.
IND-W: 0/1 (1)
It's not been easy going for India in the first few overs, with Darcie Brown and Megan Schutt bowling probing lines and lengths to keep the Indian top-order quiet so far. After Rawal's dismissal, neither Smriti Mandhana (11 not out off 22) nor Shafali Verma (3 not out off 12) have found the middle of the bat too often, let alone force the pace. The visitors must ride the storm now to reap rewards later.
IND-W: 17/1 (6)
While the Indian women's team struggles with the bat against the new ball, Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues back in the hut cheaply, let us remember Sachin Tendulkar's feat on this day in 2010. The all-time great became the first batter to hit a double-hundred in men's ODI cricket, exactly 16 years back.
Australia are firmly in control of proceedings currently. India captain Harmanpreet Kaur has joined her deputy Smriti Mandhana in the middle and though Mandhana has moved along to a 49-ball 45 not out, the fall of wickets around her as well as the sluggish overall run rate (4.47) means Harmanpreet (10 not out off 21) might need to get a move on soon.
IND-W: 76/3 (17)
Smriti Mandhana gets to her half-century off 56 balls but departs soon after, as Tahlia McGrath draws a top-edge that Alana King snaps up at fine leg. Deepti Sharma has now joined Harmanpreet Kaur and the experienced duo have a task on their hands.
IND-W: 103/4 (24)
Alana King sees the back of Deepti Sharma soon after Smriti Mandhana's wicket, and India are in a spot of bother with half their side dismissed for 100-odd on the board. Richa Ghosh has since arrived and is trying to lend the innings some solidity alongside Harmanpreet. The boundaries have dried up and the Aussies are giving them nothing to work with.
IND-W: 140/5 (33)
India continue to lose wickets at regular intervals, as Richa Ghosh (23 off 38) is the latest batter to fall. In comes Kashvee Gautam and hits boundaries off successive deliveries to infuse some life in the innings. Harmanpreet Kaur chugging along sedately, meanwhile.
IND-W: 164/6 (38)
Harmanpreet Kaur gets to her fifty off 79 balls, while Kashvee Gautam continues to up the ante from the other end. India are now inching towards a respectable total, and would be aiming to prop up the total over 250 if possible, to challenge the Aussies.
Australia's consistency with the ball and in the field reaps them rewards at the backend, as they snuff out the lower-order wickets cheaply to bowl India out for 214 runs. Kashvee Gautam (43 off 44) in the last batter to be dismissed, run out in the desperate attempt to regain strike.
IND-W: 214 (48.3)
The Indian fielders jog out to the centre, getting into a huddle to strategise their defence of a modest 215-run target. Renuka Singh Thakur takes the new ball and facing her is Australia skipper Alyssa Healy, who is retiring from the ODI format after this series. Healy is off to a serene start, stroking Thakur down the ground for a majestic boundary off the third ball.
AUS-W: 7/0 (1)
India suffer a big injury blow, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirming that captain Harmanpreet Kaur has not taken the field because she injured her left knee while batting, earlier today. She is being assessed by the medical team and deputy Smriti Mandhana is captaining the team in her absence.
Just when the match seemed to be slipping out of India's reach, left-arm spinner Shree Charani brings them right back in it with two wickets off back-to-back balls. She has Phoebe Litchfield stumped before deceing Georgia Voll in the flight to have her caught at cover by acting skipper Smriti Mandhana. Australia still marginally ahead in the contest, to be sure.
AUS-W: 61/2 (13)
After a spell of tight bowling by the Indian s[inners, Beth Mooney (19 not out) and Alyssa Healy (43 not out) break the shackles with boundaries and suddenly the required run rate falls below four an over. With the partnership getting dangerous, wickets are the only way India can avert an Aussie win from here.
India manage to break the Mooney-Healy partnership as Jemimah Rodrigues takes a really good catch to send back the Australia captain off Kranti Gaud's bowling. But in comes Annabel Sutherland and gives Mooney busy company to take the hosts closer to the target. The match seems to be drifting away from India again, unless they can snare at least a couple of quick wickets very soon.
The stand between Annabel Sutherland and Beth Mooney is flourishing. It's worth 74 now off 69 balls and has taken Australia to the doorstep of victory. India seem almost resigned to their fate now, with more than a miracle needed for victory.
As expected, Australia finish things off in style. Sutherland cracks a six over midwicket to take the hosts past the 215-run target in just 38.2 overs. India did dismiss Beth Mooney, but by then the result was a foregone conclusion. After a 2-1 series win in the T20Is, the visitors go 0-1 behind after the ODI leg opener.
The second ODI will be played at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Friday, February 27, followed by the third and final game at the same venue on March 1. India's tour of Australia will conclude with a one-off Test in Perth, starting March 6.
