England’s thrilling 22-run triumph over India at Lord’s didn’t just flip the momentum of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy — it also reshaped the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 landscape. In one of the closest finishes in recent memory, England held their nerve to snatch victory on the final day, defending 193 with precision and passion to bowl India out for 170.

The result sparked immediate changes in the WTC standings. England, who had entered the match with a points percentage (PCT) of 50, surged into joint second place at 66.67, now level with Sri Lanka and trailing only Australia, who sit atop the table with a perfect record.

England Up; India Slip

The win pushed India down to fourth place, with a PCT of just 33.33 after one win in three games. Only Bangladesh and West Indies rank lower — both winless in the cycle so far.

This gripping Test had all the elements of a classic: both sides posted 387 in their first innings, with Joe Root’s 104 and solid knocks from Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse leading England’s effort, while KL Rahul’s century, Rishabh Pant’s counterattack, and Ravindra Jadeja’s measured 72 highlighted India’s reply.

Jasprit Bumrah starred with a five-wicket haul, while Washington Sundar’s 4/22 in the second innings kept India in the hunt.

India's Batting Order Collapse

But the final chase exposed India’s fragility. Reduced to 58/4 by stumps on Day 4, the visitors crumbled under sustained pressure. Despite Jadeja’s resistance and spirited support from Bumrah and Siraj, India fell short in heartbreaking fashion — a misjudged defensive shot from Siraj trickling back onto the stumps to seal the game.

With two Tests remaining, both sides are still in the series and WTC contention. England’s late charge has reignited their campaign, while India now face a crucial recovery phase to stay in the race.

The WTC standings will see further movement with the ongoing Australia–West Indies series, but Lord’s has already delivered a defining moment in this WTC cycle.
