The weather in Leeds today is expected to be mild and partly cloudy, with temperatures hovering around 18 to 20 degrees Celsius. There's a slight chance of rain, though.
Traditionally, the Headingley surface is batting-friendly, with true bounce and short boundaries. Seamers may find movement early on.
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has won the toss against England and decided to bowl first in the opening ODI of the three-match series taking place on Tuesday, September 2 at the Headingley, Leeds.
South Africa Playing XI: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton(w), Temba Bavuma(c), Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, Dewald Brevis, Wiaan Mulder, Corbin Bosch, Keshav Maharaj, Nandre Burger, Lungi Ngidi
England Playing XI: Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook(c), Jos Buttler(w), Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Sonny Baker
Nandre Burger will start for South Africa with his express pace. Jamie Smith is out in the middle with Ben Duckett. Let us see how the surface plays. The English openers will definitely go after the bowling.
Nandre Burger gets an early wicket of Ben Duckett but that has not stopped England from finding boundaries. Joe Root has now joined Jamie Smith and the duo could soon become a problem for South Africa.
A mixed first powerplay for both sides. England have lost Ben Duckett and Joe Root early but they have made 57 runs. Jamie Smith has settled in well. He is batting on 30. Captain Harry Brook has arrived to the crease. Interesting to see when Keshav Maharaj will enter the attack.
England move past 100 but now they have also lost their captain Harry Brook. Jos Buttler has now come to the crease after Brook's run out. Meanwhile, Jamie Smith has completed a brilliant half-century. Three wickets on the other end, but Smith has looked completely in control. 10 fours so far for the wicket-keeper batter.
Keshav Maharaj yet again turns the game in South Africa's favour and giving him elite company is Wiaan Mulder. England have completely collapsed out of nowhere. They have lost five wickets in last 44 deliveries. Only 37 runs added and all of Jamie Smith, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, Will Jacks and Jacob Bethell have been sent back to pavillion. Another poor outing with the bat for England.
Unbelivable! England have gone from 82/2 to 131 all out. Within 49 runs, they have lost their last eight wickets. Four of them taken by the in-form Keshav Maharaj. England have absolutely imploded. Really, really poor batting effort.
England are 131 all out
Nandre Burger 28/1 (4)
Lungi Ngidi 20/1 (5)
Corbin Bosch 21/0 (3)
Wiaan Mulder 33/3 (7)
Keshav Maharaj 22/4 (5.3)
England 131 all out (24.3)
South Africa need 118 runs
Sonny Baker has been dispatched for three boundaries and a total of 14 runs in his maiden ODI over. Aiden Markram is showing his class and South Africa seem to be in a hurry to finish this game. Nothing going England's way.
Two different games are going on on two different ends in this South Africa chase. The 50 is up but it has come in a remarkable manner. Debutant Sonny Baker has leaked 44 from his three overs while Jofra Archer has looked threatening and given away only five runs from his three overs. Markram has raced to 38 off 17 thanks to him majorly facing Baker.
South Africa will wrap things up in a bit more time. Aiden Markram is batting at his best and has reached 54 already from only 36 balls. That killed the game right at the start. Sonny Baker had a horror debut and he was belted for 56 runs in his five overs while Jofra Archer went for just eight in his five. A very bizarre match so far. Meanwhile, Ryan Rickelton is just happy playing second fiddle.
So, the fun ends for Aiden Markram who has to depart for 86 from just 55 balls. Brilliant innings and that has been ended by a brilliant catch behind the stumps. Jamie Smith takes a blinder to end Markram's innings. Adil Rashid hands England the first wicket but only 11 runs left to be made now.
South Africa win by seven wickets!
Brevis launches a six to win Proteas the game.
Back-to-back wickets for England and Adil Rashid but that would not affect the result. Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs go back to the pavillion with South Africa needing a solitary run. However, Dewald Brevis comes in and defends the next ball to deny Rashid a hat-trick.
South Africa won by 7 wkts
Keshav Maharaj is the Player of the Match for his four-wicket haul that triggered England's collapse.
Second ODI between the two sides will take place in London on September 4.
