Be realistic with your plans to get fitter and healthier. Don’t be swayed by what the articles say

It’s the start of the year and I earnestly wish a fitter 2014 for you. This is the time when resolutions get made and fitness articles get written and gyms make money. And if this year must be different from last year, then be realistic with your plans to get fitter and healthier and don’t be swayed by the fitness tips or what the articles say. Just look at how they get written and promoted. Ten exercises to lose weight this year. Five things to avoid at breakfast. Five things you must do in the gym. How to get a bod like Hrithik. Ten ways to a toned butt. Ten cardinal mistakes that weightwatchers make.

Actually, if you ever got a chance to see the people who write these articles, you will never take them seriously. But since you don’t, and these articles are well presented, always use photos of fit people, and have respectable titles, you’ll take it seriously.

I mean honestly, who are these ten exercises to lose weight, five things to do, five things to avoid, written for? Just like a diet cannot be standardised, neither can exercise, because no two human beings are alike. People who write these articles are clueless about exercise science, biomechanics, ergonomics, but superb at presenting information in a palatable manner. Your newspaper has to carry a page each on Bollywood, sex and health, but you are better off just skipping those articles or reading them purely for entertainment value. Honestly, if you do start dating, dressing or exercising as per the tabloid’s advice, you too will be raddi, sooner or later.
