Three Delhi Police personnel were injured after they were allegedly attacked with bricks and sticks, while chilli powder was thrown into their eyes during a confrontation over the seizure of a motorcycle in northwest Delhi’s Bhalswa Dairy area.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon in the Janta Vihar area of Mukundpur, when police personnel were conducting routine patrolling and vehicle checks.

During the checking, police seized a motorcycle allegedly being operated without valid documents and took it to the police station.

According to Delhi Police, at around 3:30 pm, the motorcycle owner and some of his family members confronted the personnel over the seizure. The argument allegedly escalated, with the group attacking the policemen with bricks and sticks and throwing chilli powder into their eyes.

Two head constables, Dinesh and Rajesh, were allegedly attacked first. Another officer, Head Constable Tinu, who reached the spot to assist them, was also assaulted.

“Later, the motorcycle owner and some of his family members allegedly confronted the policemen and turned violent. The accused allegedly threw chilli powder into the eyes of the police personnel and attacked them with bricks and sticks. Head Constable Tinu, who reached the spot to assist his colleagues, was also attacked,” a police officer said, as reported by news agency PTI.

With assistance from local residents, police apprehended a 17-year-old juvenile from the spot. The remaining accused allegedly fled and efforts are underway to trace them.

Delhi Police identified Sunil alias Pankaj as the main accused and alleged attacker. Police said Pankaj is a bad character of the area and has five previous criminal involvements, including cases related to serious offences and two cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

A case has been registered at Bhalswa Dairy Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Further investigation is underway as police continue efforts to identify and arrest the remaining accused.
