Supreme Court To Pronounce Verdict On Article 370 Abrogation

The Supreme Court is poised to deliver a consequential verdict on Monday, determining the constitutional validity of the Center's decision to revoke Article 370's special status in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Supreme Court is poised to deliver a crucial verdict on Monday regarding the constitutionality of the Center's decision on August 5, 2019, to abrogate the provisions of Article 370, bestowing special status upon the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. The five-judge Constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, is scheduled to announce the decision following a comprehensive 16-day hearing that concluded on September 5, as reported by PTI.

During the hearings, prominent legal representatives, including Attorney General R Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, presented arguments in defense of the abrogation. On the opposing side, senior advocates such as Kapil Sibal and Gopal Subramanium articulated the concerns of the petitioners challenging the decision.

The legal discourse encompassed crucial issues, including the constitutional validity of the revocation of Article 370, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act of 2019 that bifurcated the region into the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Furthermore, it delved into challenges against the imposition of governor's rule in Jammu and Kashmir on June 20, 2018, and the subsequent imposition and extension of president's rule on December 19, 2018, and July 3, 2019, respectively.
