Mizoram Government Forms High-Level Committee To Aid Displaced People From Manipur

Led by Home Minister Lalchamliana, a high-level committee has been instituted to address the immediate needs and well-being of the displaced population, while also ensuring educational continuity for affected students.

Mizoram's High-Level Committee, led by Home Minister Lalchamliana, spearheads efforts to address the plight of internally displaced people (IDPs) from Manipur, as the state continues to extend its support. The committee, established on Chief Minister Zoramthanga's directive, comprises a diverse group of members, including Education Minister Lalchhandam Ralte as vice chairman, Home Department Commissioner H Lalengmawia as member secretary, and representatives from various departments, as well as the Central Young Mizo Association (YMA), Mizoram Journalists' Association (MJA), and Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC).

In a recent meeting, the committee emphasized the importance of maintaining proper profiling of the IDPs from Manipur and conducting regular health examinations to ensure their well-being. Additionally, measures were discussed to facilitate the continuation of education for displaced undergraduate students within Mizoram. These initiatives aim to provide holistic support and alleviate the challenges faced by the IDPs.

Tragically, Mizoram has already witnessed the loss of lives among the IDPs. Three individuals, including a minor and an infant, have succumbed to illnesses, while two more lost their lives in a road accident near Saitual town while fleeing their hometown in Manipur.

The magnitude of the crisis is reflected in the significant number of IDPs seeking refuge in Mizoram. Currently, over 50,000 individuals, comprising both Manipuris as well as people from Myanmar and Bangladesh, are being sheltered by Mizoram. Kolasib district is accommodating the highest number of displaced people at 3,481, followed by Aizawl (3,157) and Saitual (2,389), while the remaining 474 are dispersed across Champhai, Khawzawl, Serchhip, Mamit, Lunglei, Hnahthial, and Siaha districts.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Mizoram state government had previously established an executive committee headed by the home secretary to oversee the welfare of the IDPs. Furthermore, education officials were instructed to facilitate the enrollment of displaced children in state-run schools, ensuring their access to education amidst the crisis.
