Manipur Begins Collecting Biometric Data Of All Illegal Myanmar Immigrants In State, To Complete Process By September 2023

On instructions of the government of India to complete the campaign for biometric capture of illegal Myanmar immigrants in the State of Manipur by September 2023, the Manipur government has resumed its campaign for biometric capture of all illegal Myanmar immigrants in the State from today.

Amid unrest in Manipur, the state government has resumed its campaign for biometric capture of all illegal Myanmar immigrants in the State from today, on instructions of the government of India to complete the campaign by September 2023.

In a press release, the state government said that the Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed to complete the campaign for biometric capture of illegal Myanmar immigrants in the state of Manipur by September 2023. A team of officials of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), deputed by Ministry of Home Affairs for training and handholding of State Government Officers in this campaign, assisted the State Government officials in capturing biometric data of
illegal immigrants at Foreigners' Detention Centre, Sajiwa, Imphal East District today.

The state government further said that the campaign will continue in all districts until biometric data of all illegal Myanmar immigrants in the state are successfully captured. The same is targeted for completion by September, 2023.

Manipur has been in the grips of ethnic violence since May 3 between the majority Meitei community, concentrated in the Imphal valley, and the Kukis, occupying the hills. The Home Department of the state government had earlier issued a statement seeking a detailed report from the Assam Rifles about the 718 Myanmar nationals reportedly entered the country through the war-torn Manipur in two days, July 22 and 23.

According to the state government's statement, they received the report of the entry of 718 Myanmar nationals from the Headquarters 28 Sector Assam Rifles and it said, "718 fresh refugees have crossed Indo Myanmar Border (IMB) and entered in the general area of New Lajang (Latitude-23°51'11" and Longitude- 94°09'15") of Chandel District as on 23-07-2023 due to the ongoing clashes at Khampat (Opposite BP 58)."
