Mariyam Shiuna, the Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment in the Maldives used derogatory words on X in response to Prime Minister Modi's recent visit to Lakshadweep.

The Maldives government suspended three ministers on Sunday over their offensive remarks about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which sparked public backlash. The suspended ministers are Mariyam Shiuna, Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Malsha Shareef, and Mahzoom Majid.

Earlier today, the Maldives government distanced itself from the derogatory comments made by Shiuna against Modi, stating that her remarks were personal opinions and did not represent the government's official position. The government affirmed in an official statement that inappropriate remarks against foreign leaders by officials will not be tolerated and disciplinary action will be taken.

With regards to the recent remarks by Mariyam Shiuna, the Indian High Commissioner has raised the matter in Male, as reported by ANI  on Sunday.

Background

The controversy unfolded when Mariyam Shiuna, the Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment in the Maldives, triggered outrage by making derogatory comments about Prime Minister Modi.

This tweet surfaced following PM Modi's posts on X, where he shared his photos in Lakshadweep. The posts gained traction, leading Indian social media users to suggest Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives.

The diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives have been under strain in recent months, particularly since President Mohamed Muizzu assumed office.
