Fresh Violence Erupts In Imphal West District, Manipur

Prompt response from security forces and fire services personnel successfully quelled the flames that had engulfed the targeted houses.

In a troubling turn of events, fresh violence erupted in Manipur's Imphal West district, resulting in the destruction of at least two homes and the discharge of multiple gunshots, as reported by the police on Thursday.

The incident unfolded in New Keithelmanbi within the jurisdiction of the Patsoi police station, occurring around 10 pm on Wednesday night. Following the attack, the perpetrators hastily fled the scene, leaving behind a palpable sense of unease in the area, PTI reported.

Prompt response from security forces and fire services personnel successfully quelled the flames that had engulfed the targeted houses. Meanwhile, a group of Meitei women congregated in the vicinity, seeking answers and demanding justice in the aftermath of this troubling incident. Security forces were quick to intervene, preventing any further escalation of the situation.

In a proactive measure, additional security personnel have been deployed to the area to maintain order and ensure the safety of the residents. As of now, authorities assert that the situation is under control, though tensions continue to simmer beneath the surface.

These recent events mark a distressing chapter in Manipur's history, which has already witnessed significant turmoil since ethnic clashes erupted on May 3. The initial spark for this unrest was a 'Tribal Solidarity March' held in the hill districts, organized in protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status. This prolonged conflict has exacted a heavy toll on the region, with over 180 lives lost and hundreds more injured.

To provide context, Manipur's population comprises primarily Meiteis, who make up approximately 53 percent and predominantly reside in the Imphal Valley. On the other hand, the hill districts are home to the tribal communities, namely Nagas and Kukis, constituting just over 40 percent of the population.
