Six people, including four college students, were killed and four others injured in two separate road accidents in Punjab’s Bathinda and Hoshiarpur districts, according to police and hospital authorities.
In the first incident, four students died when their car collided head-on with a truck near the Lehra Bega toll plaza on the Rajpura National Highway in Bathinda on Monday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Manpreet Singh, Jobanpreet Singh, and Harman Singh, all from Mandi Kalan village in Bathinda, and Ramanpreet Kaur from Mehta village in Barnala.
Police said Manpreet, Jobanpreet and Ramanpreet were students at Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Bathinda, while Harman was pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at Fateh Group of Institutions in Rampura, Bathinda. All were in their early twenties.
Initial reports suggest that a tyre of the car may have burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle veered across the divider and collided with an oncoming truck. The impact left the car severely damaged, and bystanders had difficulty extracting the occupants from the wreckage.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Sarabjit Singh Brar stated that a probe is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. “Preliminary information points to a tyre burst, but we are examining whether the vehicle may have been travelling on the wrong side of the highway,” he said. A case is expected to be registered at the cantonment police station.
The bodies were taken to Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh Civil Hospital, where medical staff confirmed multiple injuries and severe head trauma in all victims.
In a separate incident in Hoshiarpur district on Sunday night, two individuals died and three others, including a police officer, were injured when a car crashed into a police post at Mansar in the Mukerian area.
The vehicle, a Toyota Etios (registration PB08CR2131), was reportedly travelling at high speed from Jammu. According to Mukerian Station House Officer Joginder Singh, the driver lost control and struck a police post, injuring an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), before hitting nearby barricades.
The driver, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, has been booked for rash driving and causing death by negligence. The deceased were identified as Mandip Singh and Tarun, both residents of Jalandhar.
The injured were initially treated at Mukerian Civil Hospital and later referred to a private facility in Jalandhar for further care.
Police investigations in both cases are ongoing.
