Officials’ Social Media Use

New limits will define acceptable speech as the policy aims to restrict staff from sharing personal opinions or materials deemed sensitive, improper or contrary to their official duties.
Tighter Online Rules
Broader digital controls are already taking shape. Last month, the Centre shortened the compliance window for web platforms to delete “unlawful information” to three hours from 36 hours after receiving a valid order from a court or the administration.

Stricter curbs also target synthetic digital media. MeitY instructed intermediaries to attach distinct tags and trackable metadata to approved synthetic material, helping audiences identify computer-generated uploads. Updated IT frameworks further mandate web firms to educate account holders on penalties for sharing banned synthetic posts while enforcing tighter compliance duties.
