Hawaii wildfires: Here's everything we know about the deadly wildfires

Maui Island in Hawaii and Lahaina town have been hit by the wildfires sweeping across the island, leaving behind a trail of destruction and uncertainty. Here is what we currently know about the flames that led to death and displacement of people.

Wildfires that tore through Hawaii's second-largest island, Maui, nearly completely destroyed the historically significant Lahaina town and the island. 36 people have died as a result of the fires, and hundreds more have been forced to flee.

What triggered the fires?

The source of the wildfires wasn't immediately known, but according to experts, they may be linked to Hurricane Dora.
The National Hurricane Centre said that on Tuesday, Hurricane Dora passed 700 miles south of Honolulu and generated winds of 130 mph.
The Maui fires started in vegetation but quickly spread into residential areas due to the high winds that swept the island at speeds exceeding 60 mph. The fire quickly consumed the coastal town of Lahaina, moving across crossroads with astounding speed and intensity.
The Hawaii wildfires have grown in magnitude as a result of a variety of factors, with strong winds and unfavorable weather conditions playing a significant role. The flames' exact cause is still unknown, however their outbreak occurred during a period of time when there were strong winds and low humidity levels. The National Weather Service had earlier issued a warning that these circumstances would increase the likelihood of a fire spreading quickly.

Places affected

There are presently at least three wildfires burning on Maui, according to the local news reports These fires cover the upcountry region of the island as well as places like Lahaina town.

Significant wildfire incidents occurred on both Maui and the Big Island. Numerous local households have had to relocate due to the extensive destruction of Lahaina and Maui.

Damage caused

36 people have lost their lives in the disastrous wildfires, which also resulted in hundreds of people being displaced. Several buildings and structures were engulfed in flames.

Overflowing its capacity, the hospital system on Maui is struggling to handle an inflow of burn cases and others suffering from smoke inhalation.

People were said to have jumped into the ocean to escape the flames. Reportedly, around 2,100 people are said to have been displaced.
