Police arrested Mughdho Das, 21 and his cousin Siddhartha Das, 19, who confessed to the killings. Rangpur Metropolitan Police detained the duo following a confrontation over drug use, while the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) launched a forensic probe into the chemical burning of the victims' faces.
Drugs and Staged Robbery
The killers consumed 'yaba'—a synthetic mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine that means crazy medicine in Thai—on the rooftop before the murders. They took more of the drug after killing the family.
The suspects stayed inside the house until Friday morning. They showered in the bathroom and ate dates from the dining table alongside other food from the refrigerator.
The two men ransacked the property to stage a 'robbery gone wrong'. They stole gold ornaments from the house and hid the items behind a nearby temple.
Chemical Burns and Suspicions
The perpetrators mutilated the victims following the murders. Sumit Chowdhury, acting superintendent of police of Rangpur CID, said that chemical burns were found on the faces of all four victims.
The family suspects a larger gang orchestrated the attack and has demanded a thorough investigation.
The victim's brother told The Daily Star: "I don’t know the two who were arrested. I suspect a bigger gang to be behind the killings. If the police conduct a proper investigation, the mystery will be revealed. We want justice."
Following the killings, the Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance condemned the attack, demanding a speedy trial, the arrest of all culprits within 24 hours and warning of a nationwide protest movement if their demands are not met. Students and teachers of Rangpur Zilla School formed a human chain to protest the murders and demand immediate accountability.
